Jamaican cheese

Mrs Magpie

On a bit of break...
Anyone know where I can get it in or close to Brixton? I've drawn a blank. I want to give some to a friend for her birthday because she really really misses it in the same way I'd really really miss Stilton if I lived in Jamaica. I think it might come in a tin, but I'm not sure.

I've seen it in one of the shops in the market, I'm sure. Can't remember which one though, sorry. I will be popping down there later so I'll report my findings.

Hmm. Might be this...

Affectionately known as "Jamaican Cheese." Loved by kids and adults. One bite and you're hooked. Enjoy with your Jamaican spice bun or one of our tasty Easter Buns
That's the stuff!
It's traditionally eaten on Jamaica Bun at Eastertime. That's what she got all nostalgic about at Easter because she's not had any since she was a child in Clarendon.

Rightyho, I found three opportunities to obtain said processed cheese in Brixton Market.

In no particular order...

1) Brixton Foods (opposite Greggs) has the small sizes for sale.

2) Aziz Superstore (on corner with Electric Lane) also has the small sizes for sale.

3) A1 Superstore (opposite Aziz, on Iceland side of road) also sells the larger sizes.

The small sizes seemed to be in the £2-£3 mark. I couldn't see what the larger size tin was, sorry.

Hope that helps :)

No problem :) You'll probably find a lot of other "Jamaican delights" down there that she might be missing as well.

It didn't help that I was looking for something labelled 'Jamaican Cheese', so thanks to all that assisted my quest.

Aha! This will explain why the lady in the office at work likes to have cheese with her currant bun! I always thought it a little odd, mainly cos I'd never thought to do it myself BUT fruit and cheese do often go together. Maybe ill try it :)

It does look, feel and taste quite like the Kraft 'rubber slices' that you get in cheeseburgers.

I have tasted tinned army cheese which was a bit like processed cheese. I think it may be like the difference between Vegemite and Marmite. Close, but not the same.

Like most things, I'm sure an 'expert' can tell the difference but to the rest of us it's still cheese flavoured rubber :)

The Galtee cheese (which we used to eat as children in Ireland) is often popular with Jamaicans I think - loads of it sold round here.

They used to sell "Squeeze cheese" in a bottle in Tesco along the Old Kent Road (maybe they still do, I haven't been there for a while) which was exactly what it said... liquid cheese (although you were supposed to heat it up briefly in the microwave before use, quite what repeated reheating did to it or bacteria over a few weeks is anyone's guess).

Always made me smile when "squeeze cheese" is a nickname for flatulence.
