Itil

ChrisFilter

Like a boss.
I've just been courted by a director at my company for a really, really big role and it's all based upon ITIL compliance..

Anyone ever done anything related to ITIL that might have some thoughts?

Information Technology Infrastructure Library

Set of best-practice documents and standards that IT service companies can adhere to in order to state that they're ITIL compliant. I suppose it's kinda like being an ABTA travel agent, though in it's infancy.

ITIL = common sense. I looked at ITIL last year and it basically just stated the obvious stuff id been doing for 12 years anyway. But, some companies like it as a "standard". The idea behind ITIL is that you can use which bits you like, but most companies do the stuff they recommend anyway without really knowing it.

Change management, Problem management, Incident management, Release management, Configuration management, Change management etc are all component parts of ITIL.

Basically it is common sense, Lots of similar Incidents form a Problem, the Problem is fixed with a Change, which should stop the incidents.

I think its also really good for creating layers of middle management, as you need a problem manager, change manager, incident manager etc...

It's horribly dull, but makes a lot of sense in IT.

ISO9000 for IT. Load of bollocks as MooChild said.

Just think Chris... you wanted to leave a week ago :D

I was sent on an ITIL Foundation course a few months ago. It's a set of standards much as Prince is a set of standards for Project Management as far as I can make out.

Edited to say a lot of jobs seem to require some kind of ITIL qual as basic. It isn't hard, you might as well go for it..

waddya wanna know

foundation cert is a piece of piss the full one is a bit harder.. but inly cos you sometimes have to throw away common sense and answer in the ITIL way...

I am ITIL certified at practioner and manager levels.

its helped a fair bit when working with diff organisations in so much as you already know the basis of why they do things a certain way

It all looks pretty straightforward. And it pays good money, so might as well accept job offer! Lots of boring training courses though.
