Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship, and beat people on board. Fatalities reported.

Are you referring to the time so beloved of conspiracy theorists when jews "declared war on germany" in response to a boycott of jewish businesses?:(
The time more correctly known as "the expropriation of Jewish wealth by the Nazi German state"?
I sure am!

Would anyone be interested in some sort of amusing but ultimately futile protest against this new law, btw? I'm thinking of a campaign of civil obedience, i.e. photographing myself not buying Israeli goods, and dobbing myself in at the Israeli Embassy. Obviously, it'd be a bit more impressive (i.e. still not that impressive at all really) if there were more people doing it.

NB: I'll have to apply for a passport first, otherwise, there'll be no point being banned from entering Israel for 10 years. :)

Be careful, don't wnat to get on any lists and end up with mossad using a copy of your passport to kill some poor bastard ...

The members of the Knesset really should employ a few scholars of modern European history, so that they don't keep so very nearly approximating Nazi legislation when they seek to stick a pineapple up Palestinian arses.
Israel's not that shy about appropriating Nazi tactics.

Parties that support the essentially Nazi idea of deporting all Palestinians from the country, have been part of our Knesset and our 'legitimate' political map since 1984. Recent opinion polls show that 35% of the Jewish public now supports this 'solution', as it is sometimes called. Leaders, Rabbis, and just plain folk feel free to call openly in the mass media to eradicate Palestinian cities with or without their tenants. Last weekend, Gen. (res.) Effi Eitam, fresh out of the military and all ready to take the leadership of the religious public and become a deputy or alternative to Netanyahu, received a flattering cover story on Haaretz supplement. He unfolded his chilling ideology, calling to expel those Palestinians who don't want to remain in the Galilee and West Bank as serfs, to Jordan, and from Gaza to Sinai.

...

But why listen to a 'leftist'? Let's hear it from senior IDF officers. One of the top commanders in the Territories was quoted in Haaretz (Jan. 25) as saying that in order to prepare for potential battles in dense urban neighborhoods, the IDF must learn, if necessary, how the German army 'operated' in the Warsaw Ghetto. A week later, the reporter confirmed this quote and the fact that this is a widespread opinion in the IDF, and went further to morally defend it. A small number of people, including myself, tried to raise a scandal over this. One letter to the editor was published in Haaretz. A much tougher letter, which I wrote, was never published, nor was my plea for a phone discussion with an editor ever answered. The issue just died down. No one in Israel or in the Jewish public abroad was interested. Where were all these holy souls, who now scold Tikkun because they indirectly allude to the Nazi horror, where were they all when a senior IDF officer proudly called, "in order to beat the Palestinians, let's be Judo-Nazis"?

Only for those who aren't planning to go to Palestine. The public health department at Birzeit has just sent out a call for a statistician to go and work with them. My 10 year ban isn't (theoretically) expended until 2012    (Although I think it might actually be harder to get past my partner than border control. :D)

Wear an Urban75 tee so that we will know it is you !!! :D

Also wear a Mask .... We don't want anything happening to you ,,, :(

Photographing the contents of your shopping trolley and sending it to the Israeli embassy. "Anyone to find an Israeli product in here wins a medal!"

This video looks at first glance like soldiers kicking something (unseen) on the floor, then shooting it with a pump-action shotgun.

Dear (Dex)

Thank you for your e-mail about the distressing events on the sea close to Gaza recently.

I apologise for the delay in responding to you but this has been due to the logistical difficulties faced by a newly elected Member of Parliament.

I share your concern over the loss of life that resulted from the actions of the Israeli armed forces. I also have broader concerns about the suffering that is ongoing in Gaza due to the blockade that Israel has imposed for several years now.

Therefore, I have signed Early Day Motions 127 and 152 (noted below) adding my voice to the many others calling for UN intervention into the situation and will work with Parliamentary colleagues to urge the Foreign Secretary to use the influence of the UK to help achieve this outcome.

Yours sincerely

Graeme Morrice MP
Livingston Constituency

EDM 127

That this House is appalled by the loss of life associated with Israel's attack on the flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza; notes that UK and other nationals have been held by Israel despite the attack having taken place in international waters; endorses the call of the United Nations Secretary General for a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation conforming to international standards; recognises that Israel's blockade, which has destroyed the economy of Gaza and deepened poverty, still inflicts widespread suffering and, by imposing collective punishment on the people of Gaza, is itself contrary to international law; and calls on the international community to require Israel to end its blockade and to redouble international efforts to secure a lasting settlement with a secure and independent state of Palestine alongside a secure and independent Israel.

EDM 152

That this House expresses its deep sorrow at the news of the tragic loss of life resulting from the action of Israeli forces against the aid flotilla bound for the citizens of Gaza and the pain which this has caused to the families of those who have lost loved ones; recognises the anger around the world; understands that while continuing conflicts between Israel and Palestine remain unresolved more lives may well be lost on both sides, further deepening hatred and distrust between many of those involved; urges all parties in the region to renounce violence, including the indirect violence of the blockade of Gaza, to commit themselves to wholly non-violent means of resolving these conflicts and to seek out and employ proven methods, and experienced practitioners, of non-violent conflict resolution to help end and heal the decades of death and suffering between the Israeli and Palestinian peoples.

My MP hasn't replied, but my MSP did. He condemned the blockade and the killings on the flotilla, and sent me a copy of the letter Salmond was sending to the Israeli consulate. I replied that that was fine, but what were they going to do to end the blockade and the occupation? Now his assistant has emailed me asking for my phone number, saying he wants to call me this evening. Now either he phones a lot of people, or very few have written on this issue. But either way, what should I be saying to him, do you think?

Few instant thoughts:

Are there EDMs in the Scottish Parliament? Can he raise some? Small, token, concrete, Parliamentary things to do please MPs/MSPs :)

Does he support the initiative to enforce labellig of settlement goods? Does he appreciate that though not directly related to Gaza, it's a sensitive pressure-point for the state of Israel - and a threat against it with a realistic chance of political follow-through?

Perhaps. I do have to say though that Saturday's demo was the demo with the largest number of jews on it I have ever seen, and last year's was simiar and for a number of these people it was the first demonstration they had been on in their lives. Now, obviously most Jews wouldn't go on such demonstrations but if Jews were murdered by Israel in cold blood, the type of people who are not nutters and the sort of people they see every day in the community, it would break a lot of ties with israel and synagogues would be under huge pressure, for the first time, to deliver a statement to the effect of "We utterly condemn Israel's actions." A lot of Jews are held back by religious injunctions not to criticise other Jews or to give the appearance of criticising Israel to the outside world, but if Israel begins to kill Jewish people who are opposing it, then where does that leave these injunctions. Israel would be insane to kill anyone on that boat, especially because it is becoming quite apparent that the majority of its propaganda is no longer believed any more, "even" by Jews.
There are Jewish people involved in Palestinian Solidarity and the International Solidarity Movement who are volunteers in the West Bank and Gaza.

There was an American art student called Emily Henochowicz who was recently shot in the face with a tear gas canister by an Israeli soldier while being an international observer at a protest near Qalandiya checkpoint; she has lost her eye, which would be bad for anyone, but for an artist the loss of perspective I should imagine is going to be particularly difficult to come to terms with.

I've read references to her being Jewish - as far as the IDF are concerned, it appears anyone and everyone is fair game, Jewish or not.

It'll be that sort of thing that breaks (and is already breaking) the jewish community from israel, at least in the west.

Yep, Self hating jews / traitors. In the same way that in south africa, people like my parents friends were classed as "kaffir lovers".

I wouldn't don't worry. I wanted to go to Palestine for ages but that's not going to happen, at least not now, I have friends and family, I even get nervous with some of the stuff I do for the PSC and on a local level. I was terrified on last saturdays demo when some guy had an england flag which was modified in a pro-palestinian way and I thought it was the EDL. I'd never do anything to put myself or anyone elses life in danger.

my local PSC have got a branch meeting this week and a stall. I really hope it goes well, and none of those "allahu akbar" twats or the edl turn up :(

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said at the start of Monday’s cabinet meeting that the main goal of the Gaza flotilla probe is to prove to the world that the Israel Navy operation on the Gaza-bound aid ship was appropriate and met international standards.

“The government decision will make it clear to the world that Israel is acting legally, responsibly, and with complete transparency,” said Netanyahu.

Brilliant! Nothing like an independent enquiry

BBC said:
Israel has announced it will ease the land blockade of the Gaza Strip and allow more civilian goods to enter the Palestinian territory.

Haaretz said:
The decision does not affect Israel's sea blockade of the coastal strip or its ban on the private import of building materials, vital to widescale reconstruction after the December 2008-January 2009 war in the Gaza Strip. Hamas called the Israeli measures "media propaganda".

Not good enough.

Have a look at the make-up of the neutrality guarantors on the Inquiry team

...the panel will include eminent Irish Nobel Peace Laureate Lord David Trimble as an observer, but omits the fact that Trimble is a leader of the newly formed pro-Israel organization “Friends of Israel” and is close to Netanyahu associate Dore Gold.

...the other foreign observer is Brig. Gen. Ken Watkins, former judge advocate general of Canadian Forces, but fails to mention that Watkins is known for stonewalling a 2009 House of Commons investigation into Afghan prisoner abuse.

Kershner informs readers that the panel will be led by a retired Israeli Supreme Court Justice, but fails to mention reports that he does not believe in such a panel and opposed foreign participation.
