I like Bristol a lot. But how diverse it is compared to how white a place it is to go out in is really something it needs to address.

My elderly parents live there and have been attacked twice in two years. Constant vandalism and robberies- the security guards just watch thieves steal stuff. Far rougher but far pricier than the Northern seaside town I reside by.

It was always going to happen when Bristol became such a popular place - Bristol is now one of the most desirable (quite legitimately imv..) cities to live and work in in the UK, and there's a seaside resort half an hour down the motorway.

It's a lovely beach. With panoramic views of Flat Holm, Steep Holm and Barry Island what more does one want.

There was a great programme on a few years back about the steam boats that used to cross over from South Wales. Apparently it used to be an established booze cruise day out.

Weston under Mare, essentially. Right up to the foot of the Mendips

I live near WsM, I quite like the scummy place when I want to embrace my inner chav. About twenty years ago I worked out it had around 100 times the number of drug-rehab places compared to the UK average as they got sent from all over the country to the cheapo B&Bs that nobody wanted to book for a holiday. Shocked the first time I saw a permanent security guard stationed outside a small pharmacy on The Boulevard.

It's been like this for as long as I can remember

Once upon a time it had a T J Hughes, Woolworths, Wilko's, M&S. All gone, boarded up except for a Poundland.

The Banksy thing helped with making it ‘cool’ I reckon. For years they were going to flatten the old Tropicana site where that was done and turn it into a car park, which was the sort of backwards shite other towns had been doing back in the 70s, but now it seems secure which is a good thing.

Went there with the in-laws for a day out last year, really windy day, lots of sand silt blowing about, far too much litter on the beach. Growing up nearby we’d have never gone in the water, just seemed filthy, though we would often go for a dip off a jetty in Portishead which is further up the coast and muddier. Only northerners would go on holiday there and occasionally go for a wade, Bristol people would usually go a bit further down to Brean or somewhere like that.

The donkeys are still there.

I went there as a kid as well - and there were donkeys . It was our seaside place - about 30 miles from Bath . Haven't been there since I was a kid, has it changed much since the 70s?

It’s Worles apart from Brighton

Once tried to camp in Weston. Only there was no camping. Got directed to Worle.

We set up and then walked into Worle for some supplies.

It felt like we’d gotten into a Hot Tub Time Machine without realising and had gone back in time 20 years. A pocket of trapped time.

Great little micropub called the Black Cat. Good walk along the beach to Uphill which also has a good little pub and some nice walks. The open top bus to Kewstoke is fun and only two quid. Good veggie cafe/bar called Loves. Quick to pop to Bristol on the train.

There is a brilliant charity shop where everything is one quid ( stock changes through the day as so busy) and a brilliant linocutter in residence at the art gallery two shops along ART GALLERY & STUDIO by Aga Kubish

Hopefully I will have time to see a bit of Weston during the Friday. I did consider an Airbnb in Uphill but it was a bit too dear so now staying at the travelodge. My event is in the centre of Weston, so hopefully I’ll have to try a few eateries.

I didn’t consider Bristol but the thing am doing to goes from 10am until 11pm so didn’t fancy commuting. Handy to know about the trains though

I find the trains down there so much more reliable than where I live now and as I said, half an hour and under a tenner return to Bristol. Some nice weird little shops down Orchard street, a lovely park and a good walk along to the destroyed Birnbeck Pier where many interesting photos can be taken. You can also see this if you take the bus to Kewstoke and is fun to be on the edge of the cliffs on a double decker. Papas is a good chippy and many decent other places to eat, particularly Indian

Did you have a nice time? I was there again last week as dad in hospital. Found it quite scary as such a lot of aggro, although mostly contained to people known to each other- also very friendly though! Strange place. A woman in a gay bar talked to me about the dangers of ouijji boards and told me about her pet snail.
