Is Elon Musk the greatest visionary or the greatest snake oil salesman of our age?

I'm moderately hopeful that the switch to Bluesky is going to continue and not just fizzle out as many of these things do - like the earlier move to Mastodon or the exodus from Whatsapp that didn't actually happen in the end.

It's difficult to know if it's reaching a critical threshold but maybe it is.

bluesky has a big advantage in that it's almost exactly the same as twitter so it's much easier to move to than mastodon. It'll also have a decent amount of financial backing I would assume.

Yes.

And for anyone wanting to make the move, this is quite helpful:

I'd be happy if social media, the importance it's given was dialled down a bit altogether. Most people aren't on any of them and even if so, not living there. It's like a load of teenagers breathlessly discussing the new cool club they're all going to now cos Mike who runs Magestics turns out to be a wanker and let's his mate's get away with stuff.

Mastadon is just a bit too nerdy and shonky.

Bluesky is enjoyable for me. I’m following topics that interest me, I can block words I don’t want to see (crypto, Musk, etc), and the financially motivated tinkering that Musk ramped up on TwiX has happened (yet).

May be because I've not been on twitter but I'm almost completely lost with Bluesky - I only really see individual posts with replies interspersed with other random posts. Is there a way to see threads like that?

Eta: will take a look at the link in a post after this - may answer my question.

Eta2: no was different topic.

yes I couldn't even sign back in to Mastadon for some time because I'd ended up on a page that was part of a different server/network/whatever they call it. Difficult to join, too, as I recall, and not at all obvious why there were so many separate segments. Doomed it was, doomed.

Was it designed by an engineer by any chance? In my last company I had to install Docker and Visual studio in order to update the company handbook.

There is a "following" tab on bluesky, same as Twitter. That will limit your feed to only people you follow. You will see replies to their posts from other people you follow. If you want to read all of the replies, or a thread, just click on the original post. It's the same as Twitter.

Ah that may be it, I've not followed anyone. Not sure I like that idea, suggests a degree of commitment I'm not sure I'd want to make :(
