I have a mate who is a conspiracy nut. He's latest wheeze is that BLM is funded by the elite to cause rioting and looting. The elite are apparently all ex-slavers or something. That includes Cisco for some reason. I pointed out that they didn't even exist until 1984 so not sure what their link to slavery is.

The weirdest thing is that I was a huge X-Files fan back in the day, and still have a lot of friends from the XF messageboard (very close friends, too). And we all seem to be pretty much anti-conspiracy now.
Might be getting a little abstract here, but I had been reading a lot of Hannah Arendt over the couple of years before the pandemic, and one of her observations about totalitarianism was that something being logically consistent becomes more important than being correct, and she connected this to the birth of mass media which could create these kind of logically consistent narrative simulations of reality. Which kind of leads to the situation of trying to destroy anything that contradicts the officially sanctioned public narrative, or of trying to reshape reality to fit the purpose of narrative.
Echo chamber creating algorithms and online conspiracy theory holes make the same phenomenon potentially a lot worse, and I said to a friend when the lockdown started that people sitting at home going down rabbit holes is maybe something to be very afraid of.
I feel like we're in for a pretty dark decade or two....
