Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

Those services you list do need more funding. But I wouldn't cut funding from the police to do it.
OK, let's say I buy this (and I don't) where does the dough come from?

There is a good deal of wasteful spending. Some hideous rusty sculptures were recently built near me. They cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. The money came from the city arts budget. Art is fine but there are more important needs like the ones you listed. The state could provide funding also. Taxes here are pretty high. I honestly don't know what they do with all the money.

Something that’s not reported (at least as far as I’ve seen) is that the US is seeing a wave of strikes not seen for decades, often wildcat which indicates a mass discontent, ancc D.C. a further crisis of legitimacy there is a report here Wave of 1000 strikes ripples across the US as crisis bites

Cheers for the link - I had heard of some strikes anecdotally from US contacts but wasn't aware of the extent of it.

They printed hundreds of billions to sate the bankers a decade or so back. Maybe they could try down the back of the sofa?
The federal gov. also gave billions to big business to help with the economic damage due to the pandemic. But they gave only $1,200 for each adult and $500 for each child. But it was just a one time payment. This is obviously corruption.

so do you have a point anymore or should we just start treating you the amazon driver?

They shouldn't say defunding if they don't mean it. I think they do mean it.
“Defunding” means “decrease the funding”, not “cut the funding to zero”. And if you don’t agree with decreasing the funding of the police purely on the grounds that “the police are important”, I again have to ask you what you think the appropriate percentage allocation should be for the police service? Do you think it just happens to currently set at the perfect level? Should they get even more? I mean, why not, since they are so important? Is it not reasonable for people to suggest that the funding level is currently set too high?

Sorry, I don't have an exact percentage of the budget that should go for the police. For my city, I'd say it should be restored to the level before it was cut in June.

So you don’t actually know. You literally know nothing about the budgeting of your local services and you literally have no idea what the appropriate allocation of budget should be. And yet you’re happy to tell people that have actually looked into it and are proposing alternatives that they are wrong. Not based on any knowledge you have, but just because you don’t like a slogan that you don’t even understand. That's a particular grade of genius you’ve got going on there, Tom.

Moreso than this, it refers to the fact not so much that police are "overfunded", but that they are charged with duties that they are not really the optimal people to be dealing with .
If you start with a severely underfunded police department, then theoretically you could do the things that some "defund the police" advocates suggest, but without necessrily reducing the police budget.

Though you'd obviously need to find the funds to spend on those other things.

We have all seen the tweets - two are on urban.

So this is kinda cool

The BBC noticed.

The majority of them have been posted since 1 October. That day, former Star Trek actor and LGBT rights activist George Takei suggested on Twitter that "gay guys" should use the hashtag to share pictures of themselves "making out with each other or doing very gay things."

I’ll have to find the link but a podcast I was listening to earlier said that when the NYPD went on a work to rule, crime actually went down
In fact this happened not just once, but twice. 1971 and 2014/15. Various reasons are posited for this, not least “Proactive policing also disrupts communal life, which can drain social control of group-level violence. Citizens are arrested, unauthorized markets are disrupted, and people lose their jobs, all of which create more localized stress on individuals already living on the edge.”

tldr - fuck the police

Fuck antifa, fuck the anarchists, fuck the rioters, fuck the wimp politicians who knuckle under to mob rule.
After more than three months of daily protests, police in Portland are facing a rise in violent crime and say they are overstretched....budget cuts and a rise in retirements made it difficult for the department to find enough officers to handle daily demonstrations....Protests were often followed by late-night violence and property destruction, some perpetrated by a local antifa movement....Police in Portland have complained that they are handcuffed by city leaders and a prosecutor who has been reluctant to file charges.....Portland has previously maintained low crime rates with 900 officers and a population of 650,000, one of the lowest ratios among major cities in the country.

This year’s budget cuts eliminated 84 positions. Another 50 or so officers decided to retire this summer, many because they were disheartened by the situation in Portland, ....With the cuts, retirements and little help from neighboring agencies, the police department pulled officers’ normal shifts so they could help with nightly clashes on the streets. Response times to 911 calls soared,.....“Often we have 80 to 100 911 calls holding during mass gatherings and nightly violence,” he said.......Portland police chief Chuck Lovell.....has sought to strike a conciliatory tone with the warring parties in Portland politics......But local law enforcement say that Mr. Lovell has a difficult task because the Portland Police Bureau has become more isolated this year. “The police are on an island, and no one wants to step on the island because it’s political suicide,”.....

I’m not sure how homophobic the Proud Boys are. They are definitely transphobic so that might be a better stick to poke them with:

So you're anti-antifa. Which places you in some very dubious company.
I am opposed to them. They are a very dangerous group. They stand for violence, destruction and anarchy. I've seen the results of their ideology.

Replying to @RoseCityAntifa
We are opposed to the police, a violent institution of the white supremacist state founded with the explicit intent of patrolling enslaved African people, and today continues to target, harm, and murder Black people, POC, poor people, and other oppressed groups.

Always Antifascist

@RoseCityAntifa

We stand in solidarity with all those who call for the defunding, disarming, and complete abolition of the police and prison systems.
