Is America burning? (Black Lives Matter protests, civil unrest and riots 2020)

Not sure what martial law would mean in the US (have they ever done it?), but the right to join an armed militia is in their constitution. The military would presumably be able to allow space for militias, with some presidential discretion to define which were are weren't legitimate.
sure they did it between 1861 and at least 1865 in some of the states

It's not just covid. Loads of people over there have guns and are getting tooled up, and state institutions are regarded as illegitimate by swathes of the country (often for good reason) and in the case of the police seem to be totally out of control
The prevalence of gun ownership might well act as a deterrent to the very worst happening. I did think that the move to pull down statues was chosen because the alternative was too horrifying to contemplate. Trouble is, what do you do after you run out of statues to pull down.

I don't think most of those things are true though. Maybe about guns, but loads of people have always had guns there and spells of increased gun purchasing happen pretty often. Aside from that, I don't think there's much reason to believe the state has lost legitimacy across the majority of the country and there aren't currently any serious challenges to its authority. Not to mention a lot of these militia types seem to be acting in support of the state. I'd also question whether the police are really out of control or actually performing their function as intended. Isn't being 'out of control' part of the normal repertoire of police forces?

Yeah ACAB and all that but the US police seem to be a special breed and Trump sending feds and troops into areas like Portland in defiance of the local authorities seems to be a new development unless I am wrong.
