As a young thing, the St Patrick's Day parades felt grim and grey. Bearded men and mournful music, the smell of rain and stout on the breeze.

And then it all exploded in a kaleidoscope of colour and craic. The beer was nectar and the company and camaraderie was gold and we laughed and loved and the world had infinite possibilities.

Now we're far away and it's not the same. We make the effort and wear the green like the tourists but slowly the grey is creeping back in.
