iPhone and iPod touch - best apps

Hassan I Sabha

Kick Muck !
I have just been given an ipod touch 32g 3g but have no idea what apps or games are worth sticking on it.

Does anyone have any reccomendations based on personal experiance please?

what do you want to use it for? Where will you use it?

I don't have a 3g but some of my favourites are:

remote, for remote controlling the itunes linked to my entertainment system.
facebook. As I am sad.
Air sharing, for transferring data between systems.
Net utility, quick and easy way to find out about whatever network I am using
Snap, for port scanning and system enumeration
tiger woods golf. For when I am taking a dump
multi convert, for pedantry.
wii finder for identifying open wireless networks.
pterm, fully working terminal emulator. with SSH, telnet and raw tcp.

Quordy
Bejewelled 2
Peggle
Sky Sports Score Centre
Sky Sports Live
Classics
Google Earth
Facebook
iFooty
Flight Control

what do you want to use it for? Where will you use it?

As I was given it and did not buy it for a specific reason I have no agenda for it and no specific thoughts about where I would use it. I am just looking for some random apps. I have downloaded a few, and deleted a few, and I am just randomly downloading other free ones.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

Here are the ones I've currently got installed on my iPhone and that should work on an iPod Touch (ie they don't require the phone gubbins). Some are free, some aren't:

Cube
Ferrari GT Evolution Lite
Google Earth
iBeer Special
iBowl
Internet Radio Box
iPhone Life Magazine
LBC
Modern Combat: Sandstorm Free
Musee du Louvre
National Rail Enquirees
PandoraBox
Real Racing
Remote
Rolando Lite
The Secret of Monkey Island SE Lite
Sky+
Stanza
Terminator Salvation Lite
Tiger Woods
Toki Tori Lite
Tube Pro
What's on (London)
WifiTrak
Wikipanion
Wooden Labyrinth 3D Free
Classics
Classics2Go Lite
Tips and Tricks
Eliminate Pro

I also have the iPlayer and TVCatchup on my screen as "apps". To do that just go to the relevant site and bookmark it by adding it to the Home Screen.

I've just got me an Ipod 32GB G3. W00T!

Cudos to Apple. They've built accessability into it, with Voice Over and some other features for partially sighted peple. )I use a screenreader.) Blind users use different jestures to use it. Touch once and it reads the button. Double tap to access it, for example. Not tried installing apps as yet. Bit of trouble setting up an Store account but I'm very impressed so far.

Found a list of apps I can apparently use and World War is on it.

Any chance of a brief guide to this?

I have installed blackra1n and Cydia, and installed the OpenSSH package but I am at a loss now. I am a total unix novice and it is talking about opening a terminal session from my windows machine and telneting into the ipod? TIA

OK, some progress

I am following the instructions at http://www.iphoneapplist.net/how-to-install-iphone-ipa-files-to-your-iphone.html

I am up to step 11 (as below)

11. Go to <root> /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework

12. Rename the file “MobileInstallation” to “MobileInstallation.bak”

13. Download this patched MobileInstallationfile from HERE. Note that you have to download the patched file for the firmware you are running. ie. if you are running 2.1, you need the MobileInstallation 2.1 patched file.

14. Place the patched file into the /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework folder and set the permissions 775 for the patched MobileInstallation file. If there is some type of extension (ie .dylib), then you need to remove that extension.

However when I get to the folder

/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileInstallation.framework

The only file I can see is

info.plist

Does anyone have any ideas what I should do? Do I just place the file mentioned above in this folder?

What I do is simply download the .ipa files from those websites or links that they provide, drop them in my iTunes and sync! :)

Actually, after I upgraded to the latest firmware I needed to download a patch via Cydia because some protection against **acked apps was present in the new firmware. But that's the maximum hassle I had to go through.

I don't use SSH at all.

Don't know this Jailbreaking stuff but from my very occasional monkeying around in unix filesystems, I know some files won't show up with a standard list command. In the shell try typing command.
-ls -la

That should list everything, including hidden file types. You can then chmod (change file permissions) for the one you need if it shows up.

Cheers - that worked.

Took a little google work to get over the sync errors. Had to add a source to Cydia and download a package to get iTunes to sync.
