"Indie Band and Trains Pilgrimage" in Wales

Dab of Rioja, Kitten? :D
Hi Wales / Cymru Urbanites

Me and a couple of mates are ROUGHLY thinking of an "Indie Band and Trains" pilgramage holiday through the West of England and Wales sometime.

In Wales, roughly in the Cardiff area but also Newport and Valleys too.

So looking for tips for venues where we can get on the mailing list and see what's coming up for gigs. Not huge big names but bands where you can get in for under a tenner or whatever and are fun - or just pubs that have a nice indie jukebox or CDs playing.

We're not screaming queens but do play for the other team, so places without heavy homophobic attitude appreciated

Trainwise, the Brecon Mountain Railway near Merthyr seems obvious but any other tips gratefully received.

Cheers.

Premiere indie venue in Cardiff - the legendary Welsh Club (Clwb Ifor Bach, to give it its proper title): http://www.clwb.net/eng/

Good gig spot outside of centre, The Globe: www.theglobecardiff.com

Good new listings mag, The Miniature Music Press: http://www.theminiaturemusicpress.com/

Of course you'd have to visit TJ's in Newport - apparently the place where Kurt proposed to Courtney, although I don't believe that cos it happened in my garden shed. http://www.tjsnewport.com/tjs/siteroot/

Any of these places will be cool with screaming queens or just yer common-or-garden poof, ime. You'd have to go onto the main drag at closing time to get grief, and even then they'd be too pissed to notice!

Hth :)
