Like marshes, peat bogs are an integral part of the landscape, especially in Northern latitudes. The UK and Ireland have 20% of the world's area apparently.

If peat bogs dissappeared the concentration of CO2 would increase by two thirds.

If peat bogs dissappeared the concentration of CO2 would increase by two thirds.
My understanding is, they are also subject to releasing CO2 based on a threshold temperature. Which means their carbon release could be part of runaway climate change scenario along with innumerable other things if we fail to bring the temperature down this century.
