ID Problems - Passport Application

And I am not paying the fucking post office £16 ON TOP to check my application, I don't have any income, zero, zilch

I really can't do that, I just feel as if I am going to pass out if I have to talk to anyone on the phone (I am hearing impaired anyway as I stated earlier) or by live web chat, it is just too much for me to cope with.

There are some things I need help with due to my issues, it's difficult to access any help because of my issues. If that makes sense.
Can your partner help?

i'm fairly sure the post office thing is an 'in person' thing at main post office branches, not over the phone

BTW I feel like I should add as cost is such a factor to me, I am not in need of a passport to go on holiday, I need one so I can sign up to things like cleaning agencies so I can go and do minimum wage work, and buy cheap alcohol in Morrisons who refuse to serve me because according to them I look under 25 when I am in actual fact over 50.

I'm the slightly more organised one out of the two of us, so no. He's also never here, he works ridiculous hours. He could reduce it a bit if I had a passport to make it easy to get agency work.

i'm just starting to wonder if we are going off at a tangent here.

it is not compulsory to have a passport, it's not compulsory to show photo ID to a potential employer.

this (it's from an employer's perspective) is a checklist, and this is where i get to if i say that person is a british citizen who does not hold a passport

it also appears that you can get a DBS check done without photo identity - more here.

A lot of agency work is done via phone app now and you scan in your passport, it isn't set up to take alternative documents. Yes for a proper job a birth certificate and proof of address would work, but for app based agency gig work, you need to have burgundy.

Sorry to hear that, at least you know not having a passport won't stop you from getting one if you can find someone to help you fill out the forms etc. Good luck.

I honestly get The Fear when I am even discussing this, I wish I'd never asked tbh. I haven't had proper ID for ages, I was without a bank account for 15 years because I couldn't get the right ID together to get one - NOTHING was in my name because I couldn't pass a credit check. When I went to claim UC on a joint claim I had trouble too (it never went through in the end because OH got some part time work).

It's absolutely horrible, I feel like a non-person.

Not sure I quite understand why suggesting your partner might help merits laughter but 🤷‍♀️

Because we have not exactly the same, but similar difficulties, it shouldn't be that hard to understand really :(

Would a provisional driving license help with the agency work? It would with Morrison’s and would be a lot cheaper and easier.

Or alternatively the National Citizen card. Although you would need the off line process as online needs a passport or driving license...

Would a provisional Driving License be of any use?

You have to provide a birth cert plus other bits, but it's £34, not £80-odd. You don't have to learn to drive, it's just ID....

I edited.

Well I'm not quite sure how I was meant to know that. I have just remembered though why I stopped engaging with you. Good luck with it.

That is really nasty, all I did was use an emoticon, and I haven't been rude at all - and if I was slightly it was aimed at my husband, not at you. I am just not in a position where I have a partner who can act as a carer, in fact a lot of time I feel like I am a carer and it is a massive stress.

I wasn't being nasty to you, I am just sitting here crying. My laughing reaction to your post was at the idea of my partner being in any way able to sort it for me, NOT at you.

I am sorry that you find me so awful to interact with. I am used to this, I have massive communication issues and am used to people misunderstanding me.

It isn't ID - it's decided by people who accept ID whether they will accept a provisional license. It is generally thought (although probably untrue) that a provisional license is easier to fake than a full one and a lot of places do not accept provisionals.

hmph

BTW if anyone really dislikes me and has found me difficult to interact with at times, I get that I really do. I have terrible communication issues. But you could just put me on ignore and not respond to me at all - I get that you are trying to help, but when you say I am being rude when I am not intending to it ISN'T helping me, it is just causing me more stress.

Posting stuff like "I forgot you were rude" or "I forgot why I didn't interact with you" is really shitty - you aren't the nice people you try to make out to be. There is absolutely NO need to say that, just put me on ignore, the only reason you could possibly have to post that sort of thing is to try to make me feel more shit about my life and about my issues than I already do.

Don't make out you are kind and helpful and then say that sort of thing.

If you only want it for ID purposes how about applying for a driving licence? you don't actually need to bother with learning to drive and it's only £34

Irrespective of all this, I probably don't have enough documents to prove who I am for most of these things - I don't have enough to get most of those Age Proof ID cards even. FINALLY managed to get a bank account and that seemed like a major victory, I now can potentially have my own finances. That is bloody major that is :)

I hope getting a passport will follow. I want a passport rather than a provisional license or an ID card because it is universally accepted for work and proof of age, and will also let me travel if I decide I need to just sod off elsewhere at any point.

Also to buy a new place to live at any point they want you to be able to show a passport a lot of the time these days.

It's not just about basic age ID. I feel trapped and panicky because I don't have a passport. If I had a passport I could far more easily get casual work and have my own income and be more financially independent. I'd be able to save up a bit or spend a little on myself for a change. I wouldn't have to ask for money. I could have an identity of my own.

My partner is not some sort of antiquated monster and we generally have a good relationship (despite our combined other issues), but I need to feel that I am a person in my own right and getting a passport so I can work or use it as ID for other things without having his help is important to me.

The thing is I know my old bloody passport (which would serve perfectly well as ID even though it expired some time ago) is here somewhere in the flat. But because OH is a level 100 hoarder, there is no chance of me ever finding it in this mess. There is no hope of even beginning to tackle the mess. This also makes me feel panicky. I know the fucking thing is in here somewhere and it will probably be found by some sort of sanitation clearance team when I am dead. They will probably need to bring a JCB and a skip.

Your best bet is the Post Office, an extra £16 may seem a lot but the first 2hrs of agency work you get will cover it and that's why you want one anyway. As for your communication difficulties, I am sure that you can't be the only person in the whole of London with them and the Post Office no doubt has processes for a sympathetic handling of such a situation.
The last time I used them was to renew mine and I was in and out in 10 mins, fill in the form, give it and pictures to the nice lady and pay them, job's a good un. As for your old one just tick the box saying its lost, they only care about them being used by someone else other than you and their database will show yours expired yonks ago. 2004 is not only ancient it predates e-passports so it's worthless to any evildoers since it will stand out like a sore thumb.

It's just so much money that I don't have, we've had a shit lockdown for income and a shit year before that when OH lost his job and everything is hand to mouth right now. My dad gave me money to get a passport a while back but then Coronavirus hit and it went into the financial black hole. 😢

An extra £16 might seem like "only" £16 but on our current budget that is a weeks worth of food (and it could take more than 2 months to get my passport anyway).

Can your father not step up and loan/give you £16 or indeed even the whole sum?

No, I can't say to him "oh btw you know that £125 you gave me for fast-tracking a passport application 18 months ago? Well unfortunately...." Also they are paying our mortgage atm. I can't keep going back and asking for money, they are working class pensioners who live in a council house.

And that means I need to go and get physical photos and have them signed off.

It's just too much for me to cope with, I'm autistic and horribly depressed and it's just too much for me to work out the stages I need to go through. The thought of a live chat with anyone (web based or otherwise) about it is just horrific because it is an issue that is causing me some stress.
The post office have a service that costs £16 that'll check your application for you.

I'd really suggest the passport helpline I'm sure they'll put your mind at rest.
If you go to a bigger Post Office, they'll have a dedicated photo-ID counter where they take you're photo and take all your details, no form filling or anything. I did it last year and was surprised how much less stressful it was than when I've previously renewed. This may not be news to anyone else. I am not yet fully in the 21st Century.

Is there any reason you couldn't get your passport in your birth surname? It might make the process slightly less stressful

Have you thought about contacting your MP? You can have a surgery visit, explain the problems surrounding your circumstances & they might offer a solution.

Sorry if this is of no help just a suggestion.

Thank you for your suggestion! I don't think it is that sort of thing, it is more that I don't know which form to fill in. I get the absolute Fear from Govt Gateway online forms having been locked out of doing my tax self assessment previously and I just do not understand how things work any more.

(I just feel like my understanding of all this has passed, and I am now at the point where 40 years ago I would have been the equivalent of someone's grandma and they are trying to show her how to set the timer on the VCR)
