I like these boards 'cause sometimes they make me realize things that I hadn't noticed before. Cats are popular in the West, at least among most people. In Vietnam cats have always been tolerated as bird and rodent catchers, but not taken into one's home.
This has completely changed. Now everyone in the middle and upper class neighborhoods has a dog and a couple of cats. Dogs stay on the ground floor and alert the family if someone approaches the house, so they still have a job. Ho Chi Minh City has few rodents and, sadly, fewer birds, so nowadays cats have no function except to eat special cat foods that are now sold and of course to use special litters that promise no smell.
Cats and dogs seem to get along fine in Vietnam. The dogs are friendly and sometimes will get a smack from a cat if the dog gets too rambunctious, but otherwise there seems to be mutual tolerance and even friendliness. I wonder if human expectation cause things to be otherwise in Britain. (Since dogmeat is not tabu in Vietnam, you don't see feral dogs, but most people would not dream of eating their pets).

I'm very glad to hear that cats and dogs have worked out their differences in Vietnam.
Well, I slept the best night's sleep I have for about a month last night. I don't know if it was anything to do with the cat or the special brownies & prescribed melatonin and zopiclone 
Anyway - heard nothing during the night, it was locked in the kitchen. Woke up to a pretty immaculate kitchen with only a bottle of fairy liquid knocked over. Could not see the cat anywhere, then I found it inside the bottle rack. I pulled the little bastard out from there as it's right next to where the kettle stands. It is now in the pet carrier and giving me daggers. It's become a lot more sure of it's self overnight and discovered it's hissing ability.
