There's an old level crossing guard's house near me up for auction. It's right on the edge of a nature reserve, a beautiful spot apart from the busy train line.

It's in a right state but it's got planning permission for an 'eco home'. If I had any money I would probably bid on it, even safe in the knowledge that it would ruin me.

Judging by the vehicles in that picture I'm going to go with early 1990's, possibly late 80's. What are those in the background? A Cavalier and an old Mitsubishi or possibly Datsun?

Stunning. It is now my life's ambition to move into one of those. Not least because I bet there's a lovely flat path where the tracks used to be. The thought of being able to walk, cycle or run from my front door down a long straight path makes me really happy.

Now, just need to find the cash...

An old friend of the family bought this place sight-unseen off BR in the late 1960s for an absolute pittance, with the prize money he'd won in an art contest to set-up a home/workshop:

I think the line still ran through the platform and for some years after he moved-in before finally being lifted in the early-mid 1970s

He arrived a full-on hippy, straight-out of trendy London in the depths of winter, with only the old trench-coat and truly manky old half-darned jersey he stood-up in, collected the keys from the station general manager at Aberdeen and headed to his new home - His only contacts in the area promptly recruited him into the SNP and because the roads were blocked and there was no fuel, asked my folks if they could put him-up for a few nights to stop him from freezing to death. It was the start of a decades long friendship.

After that, he spent many years living in absolute chaos, patching-up the building as needed and eventually restoring the dilapidated signal box as a little gallery, with his workshop in the old waiting room, turning-out work of exquisite beauty amidst piles of frankly any old shite, until a few years ago, another part of Scotland lured him away with serious funding to set-up a purpose-built studio and apprentices scheme in their area.

He also picked-up an MBE for his services to art and the jersey is now in a museum..!
