Hating the police

i had a friend, she was lovely. never had a bad word to say about anyone.
then she became a pcso. she was still pretty lovely, although her stories of bollocking eight year olds seemed a bit out of character.
then she started going out with a proper copper. now everybody is a smackhead, scumbag or "subhuman".

I know a woman who used to go out with a copper who is still a bit like that. Everybody is scum etc. It's weird cos if you say 'well, no, thirteen year old girls who've shoplifted make-up probably don't need their wombs removing to prevent breeding' she says 'oh yeah, actually you are probably right, they're probably just kids being kids and no real harm is done' so either she never really believed it or she doesn't really give a shit either way. She's very nice in most other ways too.

Recovering coppers wife syndrome

i know a guy whose dad was a copper and round the dinner table his wife said that hitler should have won the war.

So why do you call yourself a socialist? If you're not arsed about class. It's a bit like being a feminist who isn't arsed about women's rights and all that.

Are you a proper councillor or is it all streetlights and dog shit on footpaths?
Streetlights, dog fouling, litter etc are far more of a priority to those in my ward then me fighting 'the class war'

So are you a parish councillor then?

Stuff like streetlights are part of 'the class war' btw. Working class villages in this part of the world have switched off their street lights to cut costs. Wonder how well lit Westminster is of an evening?

You come from a former pit community don't you? But class is irrelevant.

In todays society, yes it is, now when you talk of the class war on which side would you place Rooney for instance, or Cheryl Cole?

do you think the knee jerk right wing canteen culture shit of the average cop is as prevalent in like proper murder police?

it's a real pity the cops are the ruling classes boot boys cause I've always liked the idea of being a proper detective.

I guess she hears all the stories from husband who has to deal with difficult people and she absorbs it by osmosis?

Class isn't solely about money.

Cheryl Cole said:
"I was brought up Labour and it is pretty shit times. But I also think pop music helps that. And that's what I'm going to focus on – being a pop star. I'm not a politician."

"The perfect politician's answer," I say. "But you are still Labour in your heart?"
"Yes, absolutely."

They are both very wealthy, with no necessity to work, neither are employed in the conventional sense of selling their labour to a boss for a wage, and both are able to access and buy privileges not available to ordinary people like me, my family and my friends.

But I'm not really arsed about making sure we have correctly assigned the right tag to celebrities. It isn't very important. And class is fluid anyway, lots of people move classes for various reasons.

I'm more arsed about the actual affects of class. For example, seeing as we are discussing coppers and policing, why is it working class people are disproportionately the victims of crime?

They are often the easist victims and there are a lot more of them, anyway this class business, I employ people, does that mean I can no longer claim to be 'working class'?

I meant proportionally so demographics don't matter. And yes, it does. You can still choose to culturally identify with the working class though, if you so wish. Makes no difference to me tbh.

Why does the mention of class always degenerate into 'what class am I then'. It doesn't really matter. That's not why class is important.

Then why do you seem to attach so much importance to it?

So what you're talking about is a socialism, or a take on socialism, rather than "socialism" as a field of political endeavour. That being the case, you seem more Denis Healy than Tony Benn.

I would consider myself more honest than both of them, though I have a sneaking admiration for TB

I don't attach any importance to your social class.

I attach importance to the deep inequality in society which sees, for example, working class people disproportionately both the victims of crime and those criminalised. In a word, class.
