Hakan…

Considering the circumstances, and on the face of it, an excellent appointment.

Will be interesting to understand the deal he's signed - how long it's for, and what's envisioned for next season if we don't stay up in particular.

On the face of it, probably the best we could have hoped for right now. He has the experience and he won this division last year at a similar sized club with a similar level of expectation. I just hope he can get a tune out of the squad he inherits.

One other point, he signed Dominic Odusanya for Maidstone whose loan is due to expire before Saturday. I wonder whether this will be extended?

Some interesting details in there, including that he won the NL South with Maidstone last season "on a relatively low budget compared to five or six other teams".

“I had half the budget of Dorking, less than half the budget of Ebbsfleet, half the budget of Havant.

“This year, we were up against teams with double our budget. How can we possibly compete?

Those teams were bankrolled. Maidstone live within our means. He had the biggest break even budget. Still an amazing achievement to win the league, but we were full time and he didn’t do it on the cheap. The phrases to look out for are “work ethic” and “follow instructions”. Think he’ll do well in time, but at Maidstone he inherited a squad that had been built for some time. Hope you stay up so we can have a happy reunion and give him the thanks he deserves.

Unsurprisingly these male managers often spend a lot of their time comparing sizes… of budgets that is. However one of the things that impresses me is not how big his budget is but how well he uses it. A lot of talk in this forum recently has been about the poor quality of players that came into the squad in recent seasons despite (rather than because of) our playing budget. If Hakan can get the players here to first keep us up this season then utilise the budget he’s given in the summer to make us the competitive side we should be then he’s doing his job.

These women managers spend all their time shopping…. for players.

These women managers spend all their times moaning… about referees.

These women managers spend all their time chatting…. Sexist nonsense.

All managers tend to spin the facts to suggest they've overachieved under some kind of handicap. They probably had a top 6 or 7 budget, which might reasonably have got them promoted via the play-offs. Winning the title by a 6 point margin ahead of Dorking and Ebbsfleet was nevertheless a considerable achievement, comparable to our own Isthmian D1S championship win ahead of Maidstone a decade ago.

Our own chairman has highlighted the massive disparity between spending at our level and the one above, where the median budget is around three times as much. A budget that should secure a play-off place and a chance of promotion from our division, if spent effectively, would require a fair bit of luck and a few other clubs tripping themselves up to survive at the higher level.

He has a mountain to climb

I believe that Maidstone were the first team outside the Premiership & Football League to declare a seven figure turnover and have consistently produced profits with player budget around 30% of turnover i believe. That other clubs are also producing £1m+ turnovers shows how the game is changing at our level.

DHFC can’t be far off £1m…?
Just on a back of the envelope 2500 average for 25 games each spending £16. That’s bang on £1m, and doesn’t include advertising or other revenue.

Sorry to brag, but yes, we’ve made a surplus nine years running at the same time as expanding the stadium twice. Some younger fans moan the owners don‘t spend enough, but there are several bankrolled clubs and attendances over 5,000 in the National League. We can’t compete with that, and I’d rather be a strong NLS club again than risk the future of the club.

This doesn't account for concessions and season ticket holders

Yeah I was very roughly assuming an average entry fee of 8 and then doubling that for in-ground spend. It’s very very estimate-y.

Well done though if you’ve been paying 16 to get in. Very generous of you.

When I looked after the turnstiles, we worked out an average entry per head of between £5 & £6 which included all concessions and season tickets but not such things as free entries given to various groups as part of promoting the club or the copious guest list that operated. Hopefully the latter is something the club is now getting a hold on.

Not a problem for me as I was just trying to give my view as a long time 30+ years Dulwich fan who is retired, watches the football, buys a programme and a couple of 50/50's, so I reckon my spend is about £9. I think there are a great number who spend the same or less. There are also a lot more who don't watch the football but spends lots on beer. All I can do is apologies.

Literally you seem to be agreeing with him?

You know what an average is right?
