The Guardian reports:

National Geographic has reportedly laid off its last staff writers and will no longer be sold on US newsstands.
Nineteen editorial staffers were affected by the layoffs, the Washington Post reported, and several staffers confirmed the news on Twitter
:(

The magazine has gone but there will be some sort of published output.

Oh, that's sad.

I have really enjoyed articles from that publication for many, many years, although always via someone else's subscription.
First introduced to it at school !

The magazine apparently isn't going away - it'll still be sent out monthly to 1.8 million subscribers, though they may start to find it's no longer worth subscribing to.

Departing staffers said Wednesday the magazine has curtailed photo contracts that enabled photographers to spend months in the field producing the publication’s iconic images.

Sad.
My Dad has a subscription for a few years.
There was always a copy or two in the smallest room.

I seem to recall they had very strict rules for their photography.

It used to be something to aspire to, to have an image or series published in NG.
