Goa vs Kerala... Fight!

I'm off of Kerala in Feb, from what I've heard parts of Goa are like Benidorm but other parts are really nice.

It depends what your looking for really.

well. i will have just finished 6 weeks of doing research in India's major cities, so i will be wanting some calm i should think. but we dont want to just sit on the beach - we like to explore.

my bf is a geologist and would really like to see something of the ghat mountain range (which runs through both states) because it was created very quickly by some special lava or something. we'd both like to see some nature and wildlife - particularly tigers :D

i'd also like to get something of an insight into indian life outside of the major cities - rural, village life if poss.

i've been to north goa before though quite a while ago now. me and a girlie mate went to baga and vagator and did loads of pills and rode about on motorbikes and got pissed a lot. i dont want to repeat that (fun though it was)!

Goa if I only had 11 days. Sun, sand, beach, beer etc etc.

Kerala is wicked tho. Actually, fuck both of them - go to Gokarna. Tis halfway between them and is lovely. Very very sedate, but in a good way.

im heading to mumbai today from london so ill be down in both kerela and goa before too long..i have 4months in india.id be up for meeting any urbanities if you feel like it:D

Even in the bits that are very touristed (which are very easily escapable anyway) there's still no mistaking you are in India. EG, if you fancy popping to the little old fellah with the bhaji cart in the street and eating them on your balcony you can.

sorry i can really answer you yet.ive only been in mumbai a few days..trying to make some future plans now.mumbai is a bit more expensive for accomodation..been spending 600 rupeesa night for a double room at the red shield(sally armythis does inclide all meals included tho..ok food. 80 rupees equals a pound.im not on a high budget but i dont have a specific budget YET.on previous long trips ive gotten anal with bugets so im more relaxed now..(even tho i still am on a low budget)i will just stay in places outside this city for say 150-200 rupees and stay longer in the areas with cheap accomodation.

hahaha go i need to be more observant about money:eek:
thanks for the info dr jon.
but as im in india til april i dont worry about money at the beginning..tho im not exactly going crazy with spending..
im going to goa tonight on the bus, plan to stay in arambol.according to the guide books the huts are about 300 a night..maybe more than i hoped to spend.

but i guess my best budget tip for the person who asked is find a place you like with DIRT cheap accomodation(or possibly in an ashram which is donation based if you dont mind that kind of expeeince)and then stay awhile in the cheap place to balance out mumbai/goa costs..

ive only been to north india before so im just learning about the south ..

im off next month for a while never done the backpacking thing so i dont really know where to start, any help is useful, thanks a million.

Never been to Goa, but I have been to Kerela, which was lovely. However I went to Varkala, which is a gorgeous beach town. I loved it there, but it had a (relatively) teeming little tourist industry with the only enclave of clubby bars and western eateries I saw on my travels. The incongruity of it, and the behaviour of some of the tourists/travellers was enough to make me think - 'I wonder if I'd just find much of Goa horrendous'.

I went to both in 2014, Arambol in Goa and Varkala in Kerala (with a few other places). Varkala was by far one of my most favourite places I've ever been to. Much less of a 'touristy' feel (tho obviously a tourist destination). The food was much better, fresher and cheaper too (and going by the restaurants an interesting mix of Tibetan and Nepalese culture seems to have settled down there)

I've spent 3 weeks in both in Goa and in Kerela. I'd say Goa is great for chilling. Lovely place. Though We spent it all in Agonda and Palolem (south) mainly. And we didn't explore as much as we should've done. So found it a little boring at times. But it was super lush.

The 3 weeks we spent in Kerala was amazing. Saw so much stuff and went everywhere. I found there was more to do and see in Kerala. Though they had a booze ban when we went (not totally - as you could buy booze from government shops and selected bars). But it was a tad annoying.

Planning to go back to India in 2018 to Jaipur... and then somewhere chill afterwards. Actually going back there with my one of my bestest friends, who I actually met for the first time on that Kerala trip! So that Kerala trip meant a lot to me!

Yes, I guess it's all relative, depending on where you've rocked up from prior. That post does confirm my suspicions that I should treat Goa with a bit of caution. I doubt if some of it is to my taste really.
