Glastonbury 2008

In other news, it looks like i'll be volunteering there finally! Applied for something, didn't get it, so wrote back and said 'i genuinely want to volunteer even though i've also bought a ticket, please let me' and it seems they have! Woohoo! :D

*does little dance*

Been going for so long now, and been feeling the last couple of times that i'd like something to do there. Also going on my own, so this way i'll have stuff to do and people to chat to!

Nice one Gerry, what you say rings a lot of bells for me too. I'm working this year for the first time, after 12 previous Glastonburies. It'll be a different perspective, a different take on the whole thing. I'll also feel I'm putting somethig back. I'm really looking forward to it -- looks like you are too :)

Im going on my own (as most of you reading this will probably already know!) and this is my first time, so you two can hone your volunteering / helping skills on me if you like :D

Well I'm volunteering too.

So that's three of us, to help put your head back on, after it's blown clear off within 24 hours.

The more the merrier as far as Im concerned! Am firmly of the belief that there is no such thing as too much help, especially for head-replacement purposes!

Arriving what day? :)

Well, from my research (ie reading what you lot have written) it will be well early on Wednesday. Cos I'd like to join Camp Urban and it gets very busy very quickly.

As it will take me hours & HOURS to get there I was thinking I might leave late on Tuesday night, sleep in the car and do the last bit on the Wednesday morning. My car is big, and comfortable so this is not as uncomfortable as it sounds. Plus, an early Wednesday arrival allows for orientation. :)

That's exactly it man, a different take on the festival and the feeling of putting something back. Getting to see something new there will hopefully keep it fresh and interesting too. I've done the 'moshing furiously to bands for 12 hours straight' thing way back in the day, then the 'ligging it backstage with celebs' thing, then the 'generally sitting round being munted' thing. Now i get to do the 'actually having some constructive purpose' thing, which i'm really looking forward to.

Be cool to say hello to new people too, and happy to volunteer to induct noobz into the virtual city that is glastonbury. Hoping i can still camp where camp urban camps (it's where i've always camped anyway by the sound of things), but looks like i might get to be on site from monday. Which is terribly exciting, in an odd way.

Blimey. You're doing it very right for a newbie!

Yep, early Wednesday is a good time to arrive. Well, essential for camping in Dragon. Wednesday is reaaally nice. Very chilled, you can wander round the site and take it all in. Things are at a pleasant "hubub" level.

Thursday gets a bit livelier, and then on Friday someone lights a fuse and then next thing you know, it's Monday, your head hurts, and all around you it looks like somewhere you'd expect aid helicopters to be sent in. Tuesday (you ARE taking Tuesday off, yes?) you'll have a zillion strange and brilliant memories drifting through your head.

Thank you, but I feel I must confess, I am only a Glastonbury newbie, not a festival newbie. ;) And this is a most informative thread......

And oh, yes. Am most definitely taking Tuesday off!!

I guess this might be an appropriate time to point you in the direction of my personal contribution to the Glastonbury community :D

Thanks! Im off to do some reading then ;), although I think during the course of my reseach I may have come across this already? Have you posted this link before?

Glastonbury has been disorganised and arrogant in the way its treated punters

And thats why we love it! More fool us eh! :p

Perhaps thats where other festivals are going wrong, lets face it festivals should be one huge messy party/carnival atmosphere and Glastonbury is the only one thats disorganised, arrogant and ruthless enough to accidently on purpose provide that very thing. May that unique and beautifully naive attitude live on for many decades and centuries to come.

Walk on....

GlastoEarth 2008 Preliminary is fiiiinally done and up on the website. Lots of new bits, including what I think is a first - the layout of Shangri La. Not all the Shangri La stuff is on there, they are holding back a few surprises of course, but it's looking bloody great already.

e2a: William, there's real ale in the pub at Shangri La. So you're sorted mate. :)

Why it has only just occurred to me to ask you guys is beyond me BUT........ bearing in mind I want / need to be there first thing on Wednesday morning, if I drive down on the Tuesday night & sleep in the car, does anyone know where I can park up & sleep? Its been playing on my mind for ages

Thank you...

OK, looks the place to head for is called "Old Oaks" (http://www.theoldoaks.co.uk/). There's a bunch of festival folk staying there. They have sort of the same plan as you - be there for gate opening. So you can rise with the larks and all that.

A bunch of them will have already been out to the pub by the time you arrive, but I reckon that could work ok... cheery faces on arrival. And they're not too pissed, you might even trust them to help put your tent up. :)

There's also the Isle of Avalon campsite as well. We stayed there the Monday and Tuesday night before the festival last year. Reasonably priced, about a 15-minute walk from town, they do food, have an onsite shop and the toilet/shower block is immaculate!

P.S. Has anyone checked the "ticket tracker" lately? It looks like they are starting to send out tickets!

Tickets are in stock and will be despatched shortly....

Now we have the second hurdle to getting to Pilton. :D
