Glastonbury 2008

what a fucking nonsense...

that twat Yorke said:
"What we're trying to do now is only play in areas that have a public transport infrastructure in place.

"So that rules out Glastonbury for this year," he said.
Presumably they're going to cycle to their October tour dates in Japan, then, straight after they rollerskate round the US.

that rubbish article said:
His band has also invested in two sets of instruments to avoid the need to fly their gear around the world.
Where are they keeping the second set?

Glastonbury's Lost Vagueness area is set to be replaced by a late night arena called Shangri La.

Organisers say the aim of the new arena will be to recapture the spirit of the first ever Glastonbury Festival in 1970, when entry was just £1.

The new zone will feature 12 stages across three fields in the same area previously occupied by Lost Vagueness, which recently announced it was splitting from the festival.

Many of the same people will be involved and it expected to have a similar mix of eye-popping late night attractions, just with less burlesque by the sound of it.

Creative director Debs Armstrong said: "What we don't want to do is create another megabrand with one central planner. Lost Vagueness was a wonderful thing, but I think we were all getting a bit tired of burlesque a few years ago."

She said the festival will have, “all the wonderful world of things that you can do when you don't have to do burlesque any more.”

Shangri La will have a licence until 6am on the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival, which takes place at Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset over 27-29 June.
Hmmmm.

OOoow, you're a bit mad aren't yer  does this mean you're difinately not going then :hmm:

No we're definitely not going. I'm not so mad with Glasto as I am with Tom Yorke, that prat from Coldplay and all the other bands who brag about green credentials which really make no sense whatsoever :D

Sounds good to me. I found all that Burlesque stuff tiresome.

They are also claiming it will be over 40 acres. Not sure that can be true (5% of festival space?), but it does sound like it will be larger - possibly due to the relocation + annexing of Trash City into the old Tipi field.

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

This is what i'm not liking about Glastonbury this year. I can't believe the tipi field is moving. For me it's the heart of the festival.
:(

I'm sure Trash City will be nice an' all, but surely there were other places that it could have gone rather than the tipi field. I had one fantastic Glastonbury where i didn't leave it all weekend...

Oh I dunno. Could look nice in the Sacred Space? Imagine looking down from the Stones... (assuming the Tipis will be near the bottom).

I am not sure I like all the change Glastonbury has had over the years. I still go to it and have a very good time but if it isn't broke - don't fix it. Still going to give it a go and have a good time no doubt but I get worried when I hear things about the tipi field moving and LV being replaced.

but LV wasn't a Glastonbury fixture, it was a passing phase. There was a time before LV, there will be a time after.

It's been around almost 40 years, in that time it's seen a few changes. I can't see why the loss of LV is such a worry, it was fucking shite last year anyway

I didn't bother with it last year, I didn't bother with much of Glastonbury. Hung around the jazz field getting drunk with crusty chick and could not be arsed trodding through the somme.

you didn't miss much, it was utterly lacklustre, exposing many of the punters who frequent it as the unimaginative try hards they are.

I'm sure it will look nice...however

The tipi field has always been a nice quiet place to go at nights. I can't see that the people living in the tipis would be too happy being moved to one of the busiest night time places on site.

WSS  & as for the Bimble Inn moving to the Park & therefore no doubt filled with Babyshambles fans :(

always? once upon a time the tipis were just mixed in with the rest of us. I can't remember when they got their own special, rather elitist, field nor when they went into the tourism business- 'stay in an authentic tipi for the festival, just sign here', but it's not that long ago.

Are they really relocating to the stones field? :( that'll be the beginning of the end of one of the nicest spaces, special because there are no vehicles and no-one camps there. Once the elite and the tourists they farm have moved in it'll lose that. Why can't they go to Pennards or Park Home or somewhere?

Lost vagueness aren't at Glasto this year for a number of reasons one of which being the fact that it really was a bit shite last year, another being the fact that Madness was a badly kept secret and the place got rammed with pissed off punters on saturday, not least though they closed for a part of saturday night in a huff because Astro cafe were camped in the dragon field and they threw a strop and closed everything for a while when they were told that astro cafe were allowed to stay as they were friends with one of michaels grand daughters who I was camped with and worked with painting bins.

The fact was that Brian and the astro lot weren't even selling anything really they just had a bit of a set up there with a coconut shy getting wankered and having a laugh with mates. I should know I was next to them.

Anything as stylised as Lost vagueness is bound to lose its edge after a little while they just took their eye off the ball imo and got a bit big for their boots with the strike. They were always gonna put a bit of a spin on them leaving and Im sure they'll go on to do other things with the brand, but it was tired last year.

Totally.

No loss to their money grabbing self aggrandising attitude either.

To give credit where credit was due, they were good in 2002. Unfortunately they did fuck all ever since. I couldn't understand that , they didn't seem to lift a finger to evolve the concept.

Mutoid waste was a breath of fresh air, even though they were charging to get in to the bar.

It went past 112,000 yesterday evening. More than 10k in 24 hours. One theory is that there are people who are assuming it's still an end Feb deadline as it was last year.

Seeing as its a 135k festival, are they going to get much more than that I wonder?

There was a full page add in the indy today pleading for registrations, they must be getting desperate.

I wonder if they got too far in front of themselves and never considered that it might not get the required number of registrations?

I'm also considering the near constant rain and mud has has an effect on the numbers. Last proper scorcher was in 2000.

I have to admit I was wavering but I decided round xmas I was going to buy a ticket and throw the ticket away and not go if its going to piss down. I love it but I also know one thing. I truly cannot be fucked to struggle through a cold, wet, muddy , pissed off punters, pissed off stall holders, covered in shit Glastonbury.

It going to have to be dry or I will not be going.

100,000 registered in the last 4 days before registrations were initially due to close last year. I'd be amazed if the same thing doesn't happen this year. Bloody hippies always leaving it til the last moment. :D

It's advertising, it keeps people informed. Better than just leaving it to the internet/NME etc to tell people how to get a ticket.
