Glastonbury 2008

Work now over for me. It's been a scorching day, sold about £750 worth of the review, and now I'm loafing opposite the front lawn at the farmhouse. It's been a gobsmackingly brilliant year for me - only saw about 3 Bands and spent the rest of the time discovering tons of new stuff.

I expect I'll veg here, stay the night, then head back tomorrow. Vintage year.

I've been back a couple of hours, have snoozed, am now cleaner only one child left to scrub-and he'll need a proper scrub!
The bath will come later

What a bloody amazing week/weekend:eek::D

Just got back from my first time there. Had an amazing 5 days, and feel fucking priveleged to have been a part of it.

wow, sounds like it was a great one. Certainly looked it, from the telly (apart from Jay-Z ;) ), + the excellent weather. :)

Best. Glasto. Ever.

Anyone that didn't go missed out big time, that was brilliant.

As usual, the BBC festival seems to bear no relation to the one I actually went to. Honestly you lot, just buy a ticket next year and stay away from the main stages (though I did actually see a performance on each of them this year for the first time ever)

Highlights: Dr Meaker at the Glade with half of Bristol down there for them; the Wurzels playing to a rammed Field of Avalon (and I do mean field, the crowd in there was thousands strong); Greg Dread and Spee playing to a crowd which numbered about 6 at the beginning and was rammed by the end; Roni Size & Reprazent showing the world how it's done once again; Massive Attack complete with rant about the "numbskulls who think hip hop has no place at Glastonbury" ; Leonard Cohen being wonderful; the mermaid/fisherman theatre field performance; the fire stage; cheesy drum n bass being played on a stage with flames shooting out of it in the middle of Trash City as the crowds poured in at night...

Very few twats, brilliant weather most of the time, line up with loads to see and do, good mates and good fun.

See you all next year :)

It was and it reminds me why I'm always a little confused at the descriptions of the festival by some on here which don't tally with the one I go to. Sure there's corporate bollocks but there's way more community and suchlike stuff than anywhere else.

It is also the greatest show on earth :)

Agreed. ^^

I haven't been since they put the uber-fence up in 2001 I think it was , but since hearing what you and others have said about this year's, I'd definitely consider it next year.

Glad you lot had a great time, good for you.:)

Just want to say as someone who really likes Amy Winehouse and appreciates her songwriting and singing talent that was not a good performance.

I dislike the press intrusion in her life and the colour of her boogies today but she fed them with that unsteady, can't-remember-the words-so-i'll just slur them, show.

It's disappointing as IMO she really has something special.

TOH watched her performance and said she has a great band. Kinda sums up that show for me too, her band rocked, she staggered. Shame really.

I had to drive up from London today with my mate prattling on like the arsehole that he is about how mint glastonbury was and how i should have bought that ticket

tbh i didn't miss it one bit but you have to play your role..

shame amy winehouse wasn't murdered on stage for bastardising the specials

It certainly seems to have been a vintage year... Still not going next year unless I get VIP backstage malarkey though... I just refuse to pay for anything like this anymore.

Her part was shit, her band were ace. I gave her a fair go, turned it right up on my 5.1 home system and was smashed as any Glasto punter.
I wanted her to shut her critics up, but no, she sadly failed. Hope it sounded better over the PA than the BBC feed.

I'm also having difficulty with the meejah representation of what we experienced.

Personally I thought Jay-z was shite, I went to see what the fuss was about and said to mysterygirl 'I have never been so bored' (about 1/2 way through but it did get better- slightly towards the end) I certainly dont agree he wowed the crowd or even worse 'controlled' the crowd... I know I wasnt the only one who thought he was shite it was widely expressed at the back! people who had waited to see for themselves ( like me) what the hype was about left in droves!

Having been the only festival Ive ever wanted to go to it didnt dissapoint, it excelled, I'm still buzzing my head off. My kids had a blast, are all worn out but were most certainly welcome and the experience was just fantastic for all of us.

I had thought at the time she was good but I did mean "good for someone whos as obviously sick as she is"

I was told shes been better-much much better and having now watched it again today I can completely agree.... people need to stop giving her stage space until she gets herself the help she needs. Watching her on the beeb website feed slurring and staggering is just embarrassing.

So, I've had a bath, a long sleep and a huge curry. I still feel like my head's somewhere else though.

Thursday night I had that sinking feeling when it was raining and although I was expecting a few showers it really felt like it wasn't going to stop. :(

It did stop and although there were showers for much of friday they were so light it didn't matter.

Someone fell on my head thursday night which fucking hurt and then we had someone in our tent the night that there were loads of robberies. Most of the people around us had people trying to get into theirs and then saying 'sorry, wrong tent'. I could believe that a couple of times but anyone who's seen mine would know it can't be mistaken. It's huge and cream with a bit stag on the front. They didn't get anything though because I woke up but it did freak me out a bit. Security said they thought it was gangs. There were arrests made that night and all seemed fine since. Someone did say they couldn't find anyone thursday night to report thefts to.

Personal highlight for me was Leonard Cohen. I'd never really listened to any of his stuff and went with no expectations but it was amazing, every minute of it but especially Hallelujah. I may have got a little grit in my eye during that one. Neil Diamond and Goldfrapp were great too so we had a brilliant sunday evening ending with Billy Bragg.

Saw Alabama 3 twice, both good but the acoustic set in Avalon was great. Saw half of Rachel Unthank too which was wonderful.

Shaky was shite, what could have been a lot of fun was dull and flat. There was a bloke there who had spent 2 days making a green door for the gig and he didn't play it!!! The poor fucker was walking round telling everyone who would listen, I've got a pic and will post later. :D

Jay Z was amazing and the intro was fucking brilliant. I thought the atmosphere in the crowd was amazing, everyone around me was loving it although I was a bit disappointed there were no special guests. When madamv told me Beyonce was at the side I was hoping she was going to put her slap on and come out for Crazy in love but never mind.

God, I nearly forgot about Candi Staton. She was a legend, absolutely brilliant.

The BBC feed is nearly always shit. I don't think they take it straight from the mixing desk, or crank down the sound pressure level a bit to stop older tv sets with one shit speaker from farting everythimg it gets a bit bassy.

The broadcast mix is a totally seperate one - you split each source on stage 3 ways - to FOH, monitors and an OB truck. Inside the OB truck will be a full mixing desk similar to the one at FOH. They will also have extra mics pointing at the audience to pick up the crowd noise.
