Glastonbury 2008

just been scanning the line up, and wtf is will young doing playing on the avalon stage?

I'm guessing that's an emily eavis booking, not an avalon booking:rolleyes:

I was going to say he'd get crucified playing avalon, but i think it's more like he'd get politely ignored.
Will Young went down a storm :D He was ecstatic with it and said it was the best gig he'd ever done. He got a huge crowd and them singing along with Leave Right Now was spine tingling.

Sorry to poke a stick in your predjudice!

I think she just needed something to hold onto :D

She wasn't playing it at all, was she!

I thought Amy was brilliant - she absolutely rocked.

Jay Z though - god - what a talentless bloke...pinching other peoples' songs and just yelling, tunelessly over them. He can't even rap properly.

Amazing! Amy Winehouse just showed up coz she had to, and barely sang! She ruined the Specials' 'Message to you, Rudy', which takes talent, coz it's brill. She's so fucked atm that she couldn't even do what was basically a karaoke set. She got better with her own material, barely, but she was obviously awful in general.

While Jay-Z took to the stage with humour and intelligence. He took the piss out of Gallagher with Wonderwall at the beginning, and then steamed into 99 problems with all the showmanship which Amy was lacking.

Bright enough to know that straight hip hop would alienate the crowd, he took a leaf out of the Beastie Boys book and stuck to his more commercial hits, with rock guitar and a hip hop beat, mixing it up to good effect.

Of course there are many who were unimpressed, yet they give the impression that he couldn't have impressed them under ANY circumstances. I thought the set to be full of energy and looked like fun.

No pleasing some people I suppose...

Yep - I was stood at the back of the Pyramid field for the start of Jay-Z and the Wonderwall thing was a materstroke. Everyone laughed was immediately on-side.

The finale with that Linkin Park track was superb.

No work today, going to see Neil Diamond in the singalong slot, then off to move camp up to the farmhouse. 8 hour shift of death tomorrow starting at 7am!

Been spending alot of time at The Park (Emily's bit). Very chilled up there most of the time, and the views from the new area on the hill are stunning. It's higher than the stone circle.

Completely. Don't know what you lot are going on about above, she was and is an absolute star and performing like one. Wonderful woman

Excellent band, also. That's the first drum solo that's ever made me burst into applause :D

This too. Empty performance, music not in the least bit interesting.

The best of what I have seen on tv was defo Lykke Li playing that hardcore acoustic version of I'm Good. I'm Gone.

Sooo much better than this boring Amy Winehouse.

Well I thought Jay-Z smacked it! Certainly looked like lots of other people loved it too.

Made me proud! Am also now wanting to go see him in Hyde Park on Thursday!

God yes - I loved that bit where she went round and introduced the band. They are all brilliant performers, and gel together so well as musicians. What an amazing drummer he is!

The thing I found about Jay-Z was that he didn't really CONNECT with the crowd. He didn't really say much between songs, and there didn't seem to be an energy bringing crowd and performer together, in the way that there was (and always is) with Amy.

He just shouts over other peoples' songs and bigs himself up all the time.

The man's tone deaf! He couldn't even sing Wonderwall in tune, which was embarrassing. Talentless, shouting drivel, no decent music behind the 'rapping' either (except other peoples' songs).

They would've been loads better off getting someone who can actually rap and makes good music, like Snoop, Dizzee Rascal, or Missy Elliot.

The Raconteurs looked brilliant yesterday. I've always thought they were just a bit of a side project, nowt too special but they proper fucking rocked it yesterday.

Mark Radcliffe was similarly impressed: best thing he's seen live since Nirvana headlining Reading, apparently. :D Not entirely sure I'd go quite that far, but I get his drift. Seriously considering trying to get a ticket to see them at the Eden Project later this month.

All rappers do that naff singing on purpose ... with the exception of Craig David.

Think Ja Rule (utter wanker) and his ilk, like making the effort to actually sing in tune would compromise their supposed coolness and macho status.

Missy would have been good - but Snoop would have been shite, never have liked Dizzee either - he does that crap singing deliberately too, I think his version of Happy Talking is worse than when Rod Hull and Emu covered it.

jay-z appears to be a silly, posturing, talentless show-off. He seems very arrogant and pleased with himself - he probably can't quite believe people are paying him so much money to do what he does.

Oh, and Amy Winehouse was great. And she has a really good band. I'd love to see her in a small, intimate venue.

:confused::D

See, for me that is entirely arse over tit! Jay-Z stormed it and Amy was mostly dreadful. She got better as the set went on, but it wasnt good.

Really, I don't get it at all. jay-z is just a load of noise over some very crude sampling. The odd word I could make out gave the impression that the rest of his words were entirely without worthwhile content. I don't like Public Enemy or NWA, but I can see the point of them. I see absolutely no point whatsoever in jay-z.

Come on Jay Z and Winehouse were both shit.

Winehouse was entertaining in the way that Frank Spencer in 'Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em' was entertaining.

Even when she's stumbling all over a song, as she did with the Specials covers, Amy Winehouse is incapable of making a sound that is less than pleasing. I'm sure it was not one of her best performances, but I'd take an off-colour Amy Winehouse over most acts on form. She's an old-fashioned star.:)

Fair enough, we're never going to agree about Jay-z, but what about Amy's performance? It was akin to Britney's MTV Awards debacle. It was way too soon. Mumbling, scatty, slurring and mostly just embarrassng.

I thought Jay Z's set was perfect saturday night headliner tbh. Had the crowd in the palm of his hand, was funny and corny and mixed it up, even if all the "say ho/ladeez in the house" middle section was predictably tedious, but it was a confident bombastic performance that did what was needed.

La Winehouse was pretty poor from the little i saw, her shreiking thru Rehab was awful, quite a sad sight really. She needs rest&rehab more than anything i think.

You've dont nothing BUT bitch since last night! You seemed determied not to like either!

it didn't take any determation on my part.
they were both shit, (as were all the other bands i saw yesterday).
perhaps if I was 20yrs old with a few pints down me it would
have all sounded wicked.
i guess i'll never know that though.

I saw her at the ICA last year. She was brilliant  I said at the time it would probably be the last time she was in a venue so small. It felt like a real privilege to be there.

Thought her performance last night was good, but a bit slapdash in places. She was better at the ICA although i think one of her problems last night was the ridiculously high heels she was tottering on. I don't think she was really out of it like some people are saying. She can't dance and is always a bit out of time with the music, which makes her look out of it. The heels didn't help at all. I couldn't have even walked in heels that high :D

According to the Beeb there was a bigger crowd for her than there was for Jay Z

Agree with this, I thought his set was great.

lol. you must suffer from some hearing deficiency or other if you couldn't make out his words.

I thought Amy Winehouse had lost it. Her voice was just gone. She could barely stand and was obviously completely off her head.

Jay Z was great. He's not the best rapper in the world, but he was damn good entertainment.
