GDPR General Data Protection Regulation

I've been to a tech summit over the past couple of days and it's a hot topic.

Was the the one in Birmingham? I sent two of my team there they seemed impressed mostly with Microsoft's AI stuff. One of them has already plugged our new intranet CMS into it so that new images automatically get identified and tagged, also that new comments on news articles get rated on scale for "attitude" (i.e. positive / negative)

Keen fuckers.

Yes it was, very cloud focused summit, which was a bit disappointing from my point of view, but still useful.

Microsoft are well on the ball with the modern office, accepting Windows isn't going to be the OS of choice for everyone, but making sure their other productivity tools work seemlessly across desktop OS's and mobile OS'

They have really nailed it.

Hmm, except GDPR takes a dim view of private identifiable information on EU citizens being transferred outside the EU where privacy regulations may be more lax. Does anyone know where the Microsoft's One Drive actually is? because lots of individuals at work backup to it without a clue as to where it is.

For OneDrives as part of an Office365 tenancy, these days you can choose where your tenancy is located e.g. "US", "Europe", "Germany" (distinct from Europe due to excess paranoia) but I believe that tenancies taken out before that was put in place could be anywhere and cannot be moved.

GDPR can go do one as far as I'm concerned. Today I got an email telling me that a particular class of data will be deleted after ONE MONTH regardless. I replied pointing out the fact that will fuck up a bunch of other processes. Back came an electronic shrug.

I hate crappy business/IT systems/processes, so I'm both frustrated and relieved that in three (working) days I will no longer work there.

Why am I replying to this thread at 11.30pm on a Friday night FFS?

This is a headache for us and we are only a small firm. Need to track down all data we have held on clients and staff over the years and develop policies on how long to keep it etc.

It is horribly complicated and there are lawyers circling ready to advise (at a fee of course). Can't really complain as I am a lawyer too.

Winot if you are an SME there is a free SME advice line at the ICO, and they are very helpful. No need to be tempted by "expensive consultants" when you can actually get advice from the enforcing body itself - for free.

Interesting. Some of us do have Office 365 but I don't think all. I haven't seen any options in OneDrive as to where we can hold the data. Will have a closer look next week.

It is like Y2K all over again. I normally care about this kind of thing but I'm having too much fun watching managers cack their pants....
