Well-Known Member
Stanley Kubrick's Oscar nominated Vietnam War film.

Was on TV tonight ..

I had not watched all of it before, but I sat through innane adverts to see it.

Quite a film.

Brilliant filum worth watching for R. Lee Ermey's astonishing performance as Gunnery Sgt. Hartman :D
" If you ladies leave my island, if you survive recruit training, you will be a weapon. You will be a minister of death praying for war. But until that day you are pukes. You are the lowest form of life on Earth. You are not even human, fucking beings. You are nothing but unorganized grabastic pieces of amphibian shit. Because I am hard you will not like me. But the more you hate me the more you will learn. I am hard but I am fair. There is no racial bigotry here. I do not look down on niggers, kikes, wops or greasers. Here you are all equally worthless. And my orders are to weed out all non-hackers who do not pack the gear to serve in my beloved Corps. Do you maggots understand that?":D

filmed in the london docklands iirc

Plus an amazing performance from Vincent D'Onofrio and possibly one of Mr. QofG's most quoted scenes ever "Hello soildier boy...."

Ah yes,Gunnery Sergeant Hartman. Without a doubt, the friendliest and most welcoming senior drill instructor in the history of modern cinema.

Incidentally, when he took that role Stanley Kubrick asked him to improvise and come up with a selection of classic drill instructor's insults and personal abuse.

Ermey came back with a list comprising some 150 pages, without as much as a single repetition.

Ermey was hired as a technical advisor on Full Metal Jacket but blew Kubrick away and got given the part.

I love Stanley Kubrick but I was really disapopointed by this film. It always seemed to be two filmettes stuck together. Two other contemporaneous anti-war films, "Platoon" (1986) and "Hamburger Hill" (1987) seemed to work much better.

"What is your major malfunction, numbnuts? Didn't Mommy and Daddy show you enough attention when you were a child?"

I keep meaning to use that as an insult on here. :)

Love it
Love mostly all Kubrick stuff
Not a light watch for a Saturday and wifey will not allow me to see it I feel but I will revisit soon

My personal favourite is this:

'Did your parents have any children that lived? I bet they regret that! You're so ugly you could be a modern art masterpiece!'

not so much docklands as Beckton at the old coal terminal .. and only one scene .. the battle .. went there in mid late 8ts and was a crazy site with enormous derelict industrial structures covered in adverts in, i guess, vietnamese, and dead palm trees on the ground!! if you look on googlemaps it was where is now the easterly point of Armada Way

So, are you saying that all the scenes were filmed in UK?

There must have been lots of equipment brought in, helicopters tanks etc ..

There was that scene when joker and his buddy were being flown to the front and you saw the paddy fields the nutter was shooting up ... could that have been filmed in UK?

Ermey was originally supposed to be a technical advisor on the film, but for one reason or another he ended up delivering a flawless rant in front of Kubrick - legend says fifteen minutes plus of pure aggressive Gunnery Sergeant filth and fury without repetition while people pelted him with fruit - and Kubrick gave him the job on the spot. In any case, the best casting ever. Do you maggots understand that?

I saw this when it came out & was shocked - such a powerful film. I like Apoc Now and Platoon but this is in a whole different ballpark...

"I think you're the kind of guy who would fuck a person in the ass and not even have the goddamn common courtesy to give him a reach-around!"

Quite simply, the best film quote ever :D
