For Fecks Sake

And speaking of shelters, it seems to fail in that regard. Though I supposed it might stop you getting rained on while (un)locking your bike, if you got there early enough to bag a middle stand

Looks like a lovely design. Presumably Leinster House is listed? Putting up any old shite would have rightly attracted brickbats. Good design costs.

i suppose really this is a story planted by the car / anti cycling lobby and the real question is how many bikes can use it and how much would a car park for that number of cars cost!
No.. it's not a "plant" .
Members of government are asking why a bike shed cost as much as a house when the country has so many homeless.
It cost this much because someone decided to use granite and special glass etc. They could have built it for a lot less.... if they used timber and perspex. There was no need for this massive expense. As can be seen from the small bike number.

How much does a 36 vehicle car park cost?

How much does a private jet cost? Is it more than a bag of Monster Munch?
Why are you comparing to a car park? It's not a car park. It's a bike rack. An overpriced bike rack, most likely involving brown envelopes, because Ireland.

Does “overpriced” car park construction ever create a media storm?

Cos this feels like cultured war manufactured outrage against some spending on cycling facilities because it’s woke or something

I thought it was a discussion about spending ridiculously large sums of public money on frivolous things. I didn't realise you were just here for the whataboutery.

Yeah, totally depends on the sources you use and swallow//believe....

Just to clarify....The Government is asking the questions....they say they didnt know about this extreme expense.

Most of the parking spaces in Leinster house are for employees and would be free to them. The bike spaces are free for employees too.

The bike shed...costs €24000 per bike as shown in the video. There are 7 bikes parked there. So it's only operating at half occupancy. The main car park will be full.

But to answer your question.
I looked on daft.ie and found 2 car park spaces for sale in Dublin. One was 30k. The other 50k. Both in apartment blocks. So probably residents selling their parking space. Maybe they now have bikes.

These sources all seem legit.

This isn't a fake news story. The cost is accurate. And people are rightly pissed off...not least the government.. but especially people who have had to tighten their belts and especially those who do not have a home.

It does seem to be a very expensive structure ... for an average of 4.5 cyclists per day.

To put it into perspective, the Washington Department of Transport states that it costs $250,000 to $500,000 to install a four-way traffic signal, and $8000 per year to maintain it. (It’s remarkably difficult to find other government departments willing to discuss such costs). And just imagine how many traffic signals there are. Basically, it’s pretty expensive to do things on public highways.

Ok.. agree that perspective is important.

This is a perfectly good bike shelter for €6880
Two of these would hold 24 bikes.
They could possibly have fit 3 of these.

Does that include installation costs. I presume it doesn’t get fitted for free?

It probably costs less to install than the one that's there. Looks like it's a concrete pad. Shouldn't be too costly to lay a slab or three. My dad laid one here for a shed.. 10'x10' costs about €400 to lay including prep. But thickness and reinforcement could add a lot to that.
€10000 would go a long way..

I don't think you're getting the point. Why did it need a granite floor? That's something you'd use in a palace, not under a bike rack. And why did they need to spend 3 grand on 'archaeological services' to dig up the tarmac and replace it with granite?
It's typical Irish cronyism. Somebody in government is related to an archaeologist. Just more government corruption, while thousands of children are homeless.

Maybe he should have offered to do it for them then if he could undercut the bid?
