This is why i don't participate in the music forum too much.

Last night I spent nearly an hour cobbling together the best of the 80's. I was surprised how much I liked given that I've tried to blank much of the mid 80's out. Must have had a good 70 albums typed out when I accidently highlighted and deleted it all. Fuck it and went to bed

I've done my 80s one:

Amongst all the stuff Id never heard of in the FACT 80s list theres no arguing with these :
SOUL II SOUL - CLUB CLASSICS VOL. 1
PUBLIC ENEMY - IT TAKES A NATION OF MILLIONS TO HOLD US BACK
PIXIES - SURFER ROSA (+ PILGRIM +Doolittle)
N.W.A - STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON
MR FINGERS - AMMNESIA
MANUEL GÖTTSCHING - E2-E4
808 STATE - NEWBUILD

Then they said
Jungle Brothers Straight out the Jungle - but much as I loved that first album I think Done by The Forces of Nature is the more interesting record
They went for Mad Prof meets Pato Banton - but my favourite 80s Mad Prof record is Mad Professor meets Jah Shaka
They went for Scientist Rids the World of Vampires - but Id have to go Scientist vs. Prince Jammy Big Showdown as the classic
They went for Prince Sign o The Times - but I reckon Parade is the Prince record thats held up the best and is most consistent
They went for BDP - Criminal Minded - but for me its Ghetto Music: The Blue Print thats the best BDP record

From there ive got these big hitters:
Paul Simon - Graceland
DeeeLite - World Clique
De La Soul 3 Feet High
Miles Davis - Tutu
Michael Jackson - Off the Wall

and then
Michel Camilo - Michel Camilo - debut from jaw dropping Dominican jazz pianist

Jazz Warriors - Out of Many One People - landmark Uk jazz record
Black Uhuru - Dub Factor
African Head Charge - My Life In A Hole In The Ground (only gotten in to this recently)
Super Rail Band Of The Buffet Hotel Del La Gare De Bamako – New Dimensions In Rail Culture (thanks to Killer B)
Primus - Seas of Cheese
Beastie Boys - Pauls Boutique
MC Mello O - Thoughts Released [the original roots manuva]
The Greatest Hits Of House - Various (first time i heard acid house!)
Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers - Live
Talking Heads – Stop Making Sense (the film)
Tribe Called Quest - People's Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm

Forgot Young Disciples - Road to Freedom off my 90s list.

i can relate to that list a lot - i even had the susan vega album ;) and a wendy & lisa album (fruit at the bottom)! I was a big prince fan...

Wierd trying to remember what I listened to back then, others come to mind Gill Scot Heron , forgot about him. Should have put Husker Du's Candy Apple Grey on the 80's list, with some Icicle Works! Still I never got rid of any albums so will go thorugh them when I get home and see if there are any glaring omissions.

you can edit a post for up to 3 days i think - ive gone back and added a couple more

might be interesting to have a "Things i was really into but now can't stand the sound of " thread, should throw up some real gems. lol
definitely... just wacked that Wendy and Lisa into youtube... :hmm: :D (though not sure i was really really into it)

my favourite 80s Mad Prof record is Mad Professor meets Jah Shaka
That's one of my favourite dub records, never mind 80s Mad Professor. I generally prefer 80s dub to the classic 70s stuff and that one captures two of the big UK dub producers totally on form.
oops meant to spandex and his "definative" list ...
No need to apologise :D Your list is as definitive as mine :)
enjoying this - will pass on to ms invita too whole loves this kind of stuff
It's weird to think, but in the early 90s PWOG were seen as a trance act. I'm pretty sure no-one listening to it now would consider it trance...

Really? I've never listened to them because I thought that's what they were - a trance act called Psychick Warriors of Gaia. More than a little offputting.

do you prefer 80s stuff to 90s AS? I get that impression... i guess 90s was the dance decade and I know from your other posts you dont really like that when it creeps into other genres

Really? I've never listened to them because I thought that's what they were - a trance act called Psychick Warriors of Gaia. More than a little offputting.

from the 5 tracks ive checked on youtube it seems ambient with maybe a hint of new aginess in there - not trancey though so far
That's the thing - at first trance was quite a varied scene from the new agey & ambient to industrial acts discovering pills to housier stuff to the euro-Frankfurt Beat to the original goa sound, mixing up all kinds of 80s synth stuff. By '95 it had basically codified into 2 sounds: the euro sound nailed by Paul Van Dyk on Seven Ways and the Goa sound nailed by Paul Oakenfield on his Voyage into Trance mix. Pretty much all trance since - for 19 fucking years - has stuck rigidly to one of those two formats, failing to live up to either of them.

The 90's was pretty much mixtapes and 12 inches for me, so this list really ain't that representative of what I was listening to at the time. 90% of my time was house, garage, jungle or hardcore mixs. but looking back....
