F1 2017

James Allison watch
Interesting story/rumor doing the rounds. As mentioned in the 2016 thread Paddy Lowe the technical executive director at Mercedes AMG F1 team contract is up at the end of the year and it is rumored that he is going to return to Williams F1 alongside Pat Symonds who is expected to retire next year, at which point Paddy will become chief technical officer at Williams (If this story/rumor is true it could also have a bearing on Bottas moving to Mercedes)

Lowe previously worked for Williams between 1987-93 where he was responsible for introducing active suspension and traction control both of which helped Nigel Mansell win the 1992 world drivers championship.

So you may be asking yourselves, what has this got to do with James Allison? Well the reports that claim Lowe is moving to Williams also claim that his place at Mercedes is going to be taken by Allison. Mercedes AMG F1 team works out of offices in Brackley, Northamptonshire so Allison would be UK based, something he said he wanted.

European Grand Prix (name) again dropped from the calendar
The powers that be in Azerbaijan have decided to drop the name "The European Grand Prix" in favor of calling it the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from 2017 onwards. Executive Director of the race Arif Rahimov said "for our inaugural event, we wanted to position our country as a part of Europe, our race as a European one and also to showcase our European mentality to the world and demonstrate our country’s openness to foreign visitors who can easily visit and find comfort here. We now feel it is the right time to rename our race to the ‘Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix’. After last summer’s race, many F1 fans discovered that our society is closely linked to the European mentality but now we feel it is the right time to draw attention to the fact that the 2017 race is also set in Azerbaijan and will be named thereafter accordingly", :hmm:

Its good to see someone so open with their prejudice

Is it just 'cos he has money or is it because he is white?
White? I make that your hang up not mine. :hmm:

I kind of got honorary degrees when they were awarded to very worthy figures - a kind of 'you might have achieved this anyway in kinder circumstances' kind of thing. But not as a celebrity bumf just aimed at boosting the uni's profile. Yuck.
I see from a quick web search that I'm not the only one that thinks they're a load of shit .

James Allison watch
Some interesting rumors and statements about Allison on the radio today. Apparently he was approached by both Williams and Renault F1 teams during last season but turned both teams offers down. During an interview with McLaren, a journalist asked "have you spoken to James Allison about joining the team", his reply was "as far as I'm aware he isn't available as he has already committed to another team". It seems clear that he isn't returning to Ferrari and when Christian Horner was asked about Allison (shortly after he left Ferrari) taking over from Adrian Newey, who was said to be taking "a step back", Horner's reply was that Newey will remain at Red Bull as Chief technical officer and we are not interested in Allison.

So if Allison isn't going back to Ferrari or joining Red Bull, Renault, Williams or McLaren, it seems likely that the only team he would want to join is Mercedes, I really can't see him joining a team in the bottom half of the league with no real budget. I also can't see him going to Force India with there ownership problems, unless the team has new owners.

There are reports on some Formula 1 websites that claim "an insider has confirmed that James Allison has done a deal with Mercedes to head-up their technical and design team", but he can't join any team until June or July next year as he is still being paid by Ferrari and is on gardening leave until then. I guess it will all depend on if and when Williams announce that Paddy Lowe is joining them.

Bottas and Mercedes
It seems that Mercedes has approached Williams and offered to give them a discount on their power-units (worth around £8.5 million) and give them Wehrlein if the team releases Bottas from his contract, Williams are said to have rejected this offer. Clearly the Williams team are not short of money as it has been reported that Lance Stroll has brought with him a budget of around £20 million, but also it may well not just be a decision for the team as they have sponsors and I can't see Martini or other major sponsors being happy about the team having two unproven drivers. Is Carlos Sainz still an option for Mercedes, I'm not sure Red Bull would release him as they can't really want to make Mercedes stronger being there nearest rival for next seasons constructors championship?

Rory Byrne very visible at Maranello
The Italian press are getting very excited about the fact that Rory Byrne is spending so much time at Ferrari. Byrne is one of the most successful car designers in F1 history and it is thought that he is having a great deal of input into Ferrari's 2017 car, he was chief designer during the dominant Michael Schumacher era and is known to take a very aggressive approach to design and for pushing the regulations right up to the limit. Maybe the 688, Ferrari's 2017 car will have a few surprises. Lets hope so and maybe next season will not be as easy for Mercedes and Red Bull as this year.

Paddy Lowe's contract
Much of the press around the Paddy Lowe's move to Williams claims that his contract is up at Mercedes on December 31 2016, but now I am hearing that this may not be the case and in fact he is contracted to Mercedes for 2017:confused: If this is the case then it puts a different complexion on the Bottas situation, as Lowe becomes a bargaining chip.

There are so many considerations for Williams in this deal, not least that the only money teams are paid for racing from FOM are directly linked to where they finish in the constructors championship and this is based over 3 years. So if Williams did release Bottas they could find themselves in the situation of having 2 inexperienced drivers and falling further back in the championship (this year they went from 4th to 5th), costing them millions over the next 3 years. Also how long would any contract be for the "new" Mercedes driver? Many drivers contract are up at the end of so Mercedes would have a lot of choice.

Bottas scored 85 points for Williams last year compared to Massa's 53, so he would be a massive loss to the team, but Mercedes have a great deal of influence over Williams. They supply their power-unit, Toto was a share holder of Williams not that long ago so knows the teams inside out, he is part of Bottas's management team. Pat Symonds is looking to retire so Paddy Lowe would be a big advantage if he could start right away. There are reports that James Key will be moving to Williams from Toro Rosso where he is currently Technical director after the 2017 season and Lowe would become chief technical officer.

The big problems for Williams are, who can they get to replace Bottas and is able to secure the team over 80 points in the championship, that their sponsors will be happy with, who can also help develop Stroll who is paying around £20 million for his drive and who can keep Williams ahead of Renault, Toro Rosso and McLaren in the constructors championship.

Just thinking out-loud, but Paul di Resta is Williams reserve driver, yet I haven't heard or read anything about him replacing Bottas, should he move :hmm:

Could Massa postpone retirement?
Was it Massa's decision to retire or did he have little choice? With the massive points advantage Bottas had over Felipe, clearly Williams would have always chosen the younger driver and with Stroll taking one seat at Williams Massa had nowhere to go, so he retired. But with Mercedes closing in on Bottas could we see Massa back on the grid for 2017? It seems to me that as there is no other experienced driver available and if Mercedes manages to get Bottas then Massa is the obvious choice for Williams.

Claire Williams is open to the idea of Bottas moving to Mercedes if Williams can find a "credible alternative". Speaking to the BBC Claire is reported to have said "I'm delighted to see that a team like Mercedes lists Valtteri as a potential replacement for Nico. We have always known Valtteri is one of the sport's key talents and are proud that the championship leaders recognise this. However, Williams has its own ambitions and we must always ensure we give our team the best opportunity to move forward. Any changes would only be made if Williams remains in a strong position to compete and develop in 2017. If we did allow Valtteri to leave, we would only do this if an experienced, credible alternative was available, such as someone like Felipe Massa, for example".

Brundle Meets Bernie
If you missed the Martin Brundle interview with Bernie that was aired over the last race weekend, here it is.

Pat Symonds leaving Williams in 2 weeks
Williams today announces that Pat Symonds will be stepping down from the role of Chief Technical Officer of WILLIAMS MARTINI RACING at the end of 2016. Pat joined Williams towards the end of the 2013 Formula One season on a three-year contract, and in that time has helped oversee a strong turn around in the team’s performances on the race track, with 14 podiums secured over the past three seasons. Pat will be departing on 31st December 2016. Claire Williams, Deputy Team Principal, said; “Pat has been a tremendous asset to this team over the past three years. Pat’s appointment was the start of a major restructuring exercise, and he has been pivotal in reshaping Williams into what is a much stronger racing team today. I would like to thank him for all of his hard work and commitment during that time. We now look to the future and will be announcing details regarding the team’s technical leadership in due course.”

Surely that means Paddy Lowe will join the team :hmm:

Massa has agreed terms to rejoin Williams

It is being reported here that Massa has said he has agreed a £5 million deal to rejoin Williams for 2017 but there will be no announcement until the new year as Bottas and Mercedes are waiting until then to make their own announcement. So it looks likely that Bottas and Williams have agreed a deal, which I'm sure will include Lowe moving without having to take gardening leave or the Williams statement above is wrong ;)

It's a night of the long knives at McLaren.

Anyone with Ron Dennis's fingerprints on is history...

Jost Capito: McLaren to part company with F1 boss after four months

Capito's gone. The marketing guy.

Zac Brown and Jonathan Neale will run the team, but the most experienced person there is Eric Boullier.

Somewhere, far away, Martin Whitmarsh is raising a glass to karma...

:)
Maybe that will put an end to the rumors that Eric Boullier is moving to Ferrari or McLaren will be very short staffed ;)

Ekrem Sami has also been removed from the board, he and Ron go back over 40 years when they worked together at Project Four Racing.

So, great news for Massa, Bottas, Lowe, Mercedes and Williams.

(And, I think, for Eric Boullier.)

I'm changing my mind about Rosberg's abdication.

Liberty media learning from Bernie
It seems that the new owners of F1 have taken a leaf out of Bernie's book and started flying kites, we have three old stories (pushed by FOM in the recent past) again being proposed by Liberty media. The first is a price cap on team spending, something that is outside their remit, that comes under the responsibility of the FIA and not the sports right holders. Also it seems they want to change race weekends as "Americans appear not to have a very long attention span", Liberty want to cancel Fridays and have two races over the weekend, a sprint on Saturday with a shortened race on Sunday. Finally they want to re-aligning the calendar "to be more US and Euro friendly", I guess all they need to do now to capture all Bernie's strange ideas over the last couple of years is propose they go to Gold, Silver and Bronze medals.

I really hoped that the new buyers of F1 would come up with some new ideas and not just rehash Bernie's kite flying exercises.

Ron Dennis rumors
Well it is the off season so slow news for F1, but there are reports appearing in the news that Ron is trying to buy Manor F1, the reports claim that the Chinese consortium who wanted to takeover McLaren are now pushing Ron to buy Manor instead. Dennis has a very close friend inside Manor, Dave Ryan Manor's racing director who spent most of his career working under Dennis at McLaren. The team is for sure up for sale as there have been reports that Tavo Hellmund was buying the team (as mentioned above he is the promoter of the USGP and was also behind the race returning to Mexico). There were also rumors of an internal buyout by Manor sporting director Graeme Lowdon and Indonesian businessman Ricardo Gelael purchasing the team. This can only be good news for Stephen Fitzpatrick as a bidding war can only drive the price up, it could also mean some serious investment in a back-marker.

and fuck the americans with short attention spans fucking up the scheduling
Given what the US media have perpetrated on American football - time outs, multiple umpires, game reviews, 6-second slices of action followed by advertising, additional "halves" inserted to make quarters for advertising opportunities, etc - there is nothing the TV people won't do to maximise their audience ("the Cleetus factor") and boost the opportunities for, and return from, advertising to them.

So, F1 and ad breaks? Remember them? One thing (among quite a few IMHO) that Sky got right. The usual amount during Practice, but the race itself - no dicking about.

The chances of a US media company in control of a 2-hour sports event NOT fucking it about? Nil.

As a lifelong, engineering-inspired petrolhead, I would hate to see the automotive genius that is F1 reduced to the lowest common denominator, a Hollywoodised explosion-fest cum popularity contest with audience participation, tag-wrestling and 6-second attention span racing.

Don't get me wrong - I couldn't give a crap what US TV does for its own audiences. But when they jerk around the product itself to make it play in Peoria, they make it less attractive pretty much everywhere outside US territorial waters.

When is that Concord agreement up?

ETA: Merry Christmas, everyone! :D

Oh NO!!!
Now Liberty Media say they want to make every Grand Prix like a Super Bowl, a week long event.
There was a report in the FT with some details but it is behind a pay-wall, but I'm sure if you search for "grand prix super bowl" you'll find what they are planning
