F1 2017

When he says he's climbed his personal mountain, it does rather imply he doesn't think he can repeat the feat - both in beating Hammy, and having the supreme car in the field.

So , grab the cup and run.

And all because Hammy's engine detonated in Malaysia scrubbing 25 points off his season.

The Beeb are going on about the 'main players' ie Vetted Vestappen and Alonso are all contracted until the end of next season, which only leaves their reserve driver (who is shit).
So with Button almost certainly swanning about the Med or occasionally having a chin off with Coulthard, who knows....

Probably not though. Probably some German rich kid ala that episode of The Simpson's where Are and Bart going looking for that stolen gold. "Ay bum boys, get a room!" one

All the news story's seem to relate to a facebook post, so I'm still a little unsure. Speaking on a Sky sports news interview, posted just 4 hours ago he didn't make any reference to retiring.

Edit to say, when he was asked about racing next year as a world champion he said "I don't want to talk about that, I concentrating on this" pointing at the trophy.

The BBC story looks confident. That said...

In the old days, editors would insist on two sources, or a direct attribution to the protagonist.

These days, it's "content" not journalism, so who the fuck knows.

This would be a brilliant hoax...

:D

I honestly don't know why people are surprised.

He's just achieved his dream. He's just become a dad. The death of Jules Bianchi will still be in his mind. It's an entirely logical desicion.

Fair play to him. Go out at the top.

All the top drivers will have a clause in their contract saying something along the lines of allowing them to moving to a team higher up the championship table. Doesn't mean they will move just giving them the option.

It will be interesting to see who get the drive.

I'd also add hindsight is a wonderful thing :)

All those are good enough reasons to go and fucking fair play to him. Also he knows full well he'd be second to Lewis next year...

Toto Wolff has been commenting on Nico Rosberg’s shock decision to quit F1.

“This is a brave decision by Nico and testament to the strength of his character,” he said. “He has chosen to leave at the pinnacle of his career, as World Champion, having achieved his childhood dream. The clarity of his judgement meant I accepted his decision straight away when he told me. It’s impossible to capture the essence of a person in a few short words. But Nico has a special combination of natural talent and fighting spirit that have brought him to where he is today.

“Throughout his career, people have thought he was on a golden path to success just because his father was a World Champion; in fact, I think in some ways that made the challenge greater – and meant he had to fight even harder with the weight of expectation on his shoulders. With Mercedes, Nico has been a relentless competitor, bouncing back from tough times in an inspirational way, and he earned the respect of the sport with his tenacity, his fighting spirit and his grace under pressure.

“Since 2010, he has poured competitive energy into our team and we have grown stronger because of it. We simply say ‘thank you’ for the incredible contribution he has made to our success, alongside two of the all-time great drivers, Michael and Lewis. For the team, this is an unexpected situation but also an exciting one. We are going into a new era of technical regulations and there is a free Mercedes cockpit for the seasons ahead. We will take the necessary time to evaluate our options and then find the right path for our future.”

They'd better fork out the necessary cash to get Vettel or Alonso, shoving Pascal Wehrlein or some 12-year old in there won't do anyone any favours, including Hamilton.

Alonso v Hamilton V2 :) but perhaps Hamilton has a clause saying anyone but Alonso!
With the massive change to cars next year it will be interesting to see what happens, I'm not sure which drivers would want to move, I think Mercedes will be a top car next year and I'm sure Red Bull will also. Not sure about the Ferrari.

Clearly this has come as a massive surprise for Mercedes and no one there thought it would happen or they would have ensured they had a replacement.

I'm so conflicted about this. Happy for Lewis. It's not been a happy partnership.

Disappointed in Nico. You can't help but feel that he knows he'll lose the title next year so has wimped out to save face.

Once you win a world championship that's the time to cash in. Kerching kerching! Endorsements supreme.

Is he an idiot for throwing that away for pride or a hero for not being greedy?

Anyway it's his life. He's done what many can only dream of. Enjoy your retirement.

They'll have a list of who they want. You don't run things at that level without having a whole host of "what if" plans.
I don't believe it even crossed Mercedes radar that Rosberg would retire if he won, I read loads of F1 press and I can't think of one story in the last 12 months that even hinted at it, I don't think even Rosberg thought about it until after he won the championship.

This has come as a surprise to Mercedes and I don't believe for a moment they have planed for it.

Mercedes have let both there young drivers go to other teams but they may have a clause in their contracts that if one of their Mercedes AMG team drivers become unavailable they can recall them, it makes life very difficult for the team. I can see Lewis winning the drivers championship next year (unless Red Bull pull a rabbit out of the hat with their new design) but not so sure now Mercedes will win the constructors and that will be their focus.

Is Rosberg allowed to retire? What about his contract with Merc, won't he have to pay to get out of it?
No, Drivers of his standing will have a retirement clause in their contract, Rosberg will have thought about the $45 million he will loose not driving for the team next year, but I don't think he needs the money.

Chicken feed compared to the endorsement money he could have milked.
