F1 2017

I learned two things from that clip.

First, when a strong car is out of position at the back of the grid, providing the circuit is compatible, you're going to get a lot of sweet overtaking.

Second, Max V is probably the best 'overtaker' on the grid.

A nice late morning race, that makes a change, word is that Bernie could show up in Bahrain, would be good to see the old fellow :)

The "shield" cockpit protection concept
As mentioned above, the FIA have been looking at a cockpit shield to provide head protection to the drivers. Autosport.com say this is what it will look like. Rather than the shield being an attachment around the edge of the cockpit like the halo and aeroscreen, it is more integral to the nose section of the car and begins much further forward than the two ideas already trialled. The sloping see-through screen does not extend fully over the cockpit, even though it does end up higher than the driver's crash helmet. Drivers were told in the Shanghai briefing that while the design has proved effective in early testing for smaller pieces of debris, it is not as effective when it comes to deflecting larger items such as wheels. But given the resistance to the halo from some quarters, it has been suggested that the shield could present the best compromise between safety and aesthetics.

F1 teams and the FIA have agreed to introduce a form of cockpit protection for next season, but agreement has not yet been reached on which concept it should be. Majority approval on the matter is required before the end of this month, otherwise the FIA will need unanimous backing from teams, something that may not be possible as several of them are not convinced about the need to cover cockpits.

Turkish Grand Prix anyone?
A meeting between Chase Carey (Liberty Media) and Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan has raised prospects of the Turkish Grand Prix returning to the calendar. Also in the meeting were Serkan Yazici, the president of Turkey’s automobile club TOSFED, and Istanbul Park circuit operator Vural Ak also Akif Cagatay Kilic, the youth and sports minister.

F1 previously raced at the purpose-built Istanbul Park circuit between 2005 and 2011, but the race saw poor attendance figures over its final years on the calendar. only about 4,000 people turned up at one race there (iirc), there is a lot of scope to expand the calendar as there are around 15 tracks that are licensed to hold F1 races that don't at the moment.

Perhaps two birds with one stone?

1. Dear Fernando, yes Massa is quicker than you, but thanks for sticking around. Have a weekend off and see if you can collect some silverware. If you do, send us a picture, because we've forgotten what trophies look like. Don't worry who we strap in in Monaco, we have no chance of points anyway... Is your trainer free that weekend?

2. Look, everybody, it's a Honda engine! He's choosing to race a Honda engine! A Honda engine that won the Indio-appley Muscley Car thing last year! Did someone mention Honda? Well, now you know they're not as shite as F1 makes out!

:p

Going for the triple?

I would like to see Alonso in a Le Mans car!
Alonso says he wants to be remembered as "a great racing driver" and he feels that he would need to win about 8 more F1 championship to become one, so going for the Triple Crown would put him there as only Graham Hill has won Monaco, Indy 500 and La Mans 24 hour.

Its interesting that McLaren haven't announced Jenson will drive for them in Monaco but BBC says "Jenson looks set to replace Alonso" although no official announcement has been made. There isn't really many choices as only 17 drivers not already driving in F1 have a super-license and one of them is driving in Indy and others are contracted to different teams.

If not Jenson who else could take the seat? Lando Norrism was signed up by Zak Brown a couple of months ago for McLarens young driver program, he is seen as the next British hope in F1, also on the list could be Nobuharu Matsushita (also a McLaren young driver), Oliver Turvey and Nyck de Vries, if McLaren are looking to test someone with a baptism of fire.

I have a feeling that Jenson will top the list but it is unclear how fit he is, according to Ted Kravitz when he last met Jenson his neck muscles had shrunk and it would take a lot of training to get him fit again to race in F1 (although Monaco isn't one of the hardest races on the neck), also there is the question of where Jenson would be of best use at Monaco to McLaren, may be that would be off track promoting the team and talking to sponsors.

Further to the post above;
The link says "Britain's Jenson Button looks set to replace Fernando Alonso at McLaren for the Monaco Grand Prix in May". As he is McLarens reserve driver one would expect him to "look set to replace Fernando Alonso".

I think the reason no official announcement has been made is because Zak Brown doesn't want to tie Eric Boullier's hands, as he is the team principle and therefore has is ultimately responsible for making any such announcement. What he did say shows there are other options, Brown said "We have a few different options, we will state who that is when we know" and "I wouldn't want to share the conversations he [Boullier] has had with whom", so clearly they have spoken about it and it isn't cut and dry just yet(I'm sure the team will be pressed for an answer at this weekends race).

Interestingly the link also mentions Esteban Gutierrez and Felipe Nasr, I'm not sure if they would be of much benefit to McLaren unless they are thinking of signing one of them to replace Alonso when he leaves, I'd have thought if not Jenson (and he has to be first choice I'd think) they'd be better off promoting one of their young drivers as they have little chance of getting into the points with their current car.

Great news, it will be good to see Jenson back behind the wheel. I'm surprised that he will not be driving the car at all before the Monaco weekend, there are plenty of chances for him to do so. There is a test after the Bahrain race where he could drive the car or he could drive in free practice in Russia or Spain, but he has decided just to use the simulator. He also thinks he may be able to get McLaren a few points, if they can get the car to the end of the race ;)

While in season testing is meant for "young" drivers (drivers who have competed in fewer than three Grands Prix), they are allowed to used any driver for 2 of the days so Jenson could run in the test. Despite Ted Kravitz view about Jenson's fitness, Button says he is "supremely fit" and has no worries on that score.

Is the 2017 Ferrari legal
There are whispers that some as yet unnamed teams are thinking of protesting Ferrari at the Bahrain GP. From what I understand the car floor is flexing downwards at the sides also the rear wing and diffuser are flexing which helps with downforce, but is illegal. Apparently there are slow motion recordings of Raikkonen's car that show this, so I'm sure other teams are taking a close look.

Ah fucksakes, I hope it is legal, otherwise Merc will trot off into the sunshine again.

Claire Williams is pregnant :)
Who's the lucky guy ?

Quali coming up with a bowl of chips and a beer.
Good morning, I guess the lucky guy is Andrew Murdoch who is an engineer at Williams, I think they have been an item for a while.

Beer here also :)

They spoke to Bernie on the Brazilian feed and he said he has had almost no contact with the new owners, they also said that he will be here at Bahrain and also Russia because he had it written into the contracts with those circuits and some others that he must be the lead negotiator on future contracts, something that I'm sure Liberty media will want removed for any future contracts and must have pissed them off somewhat :)

It was also reported that he [Bernie] over charged some of the newer circuits for races just because he knew he'd get away with it and doesn't think he delivered all he could have for those tracks

feathering his nest for year more than likely

alonso lucky to get to in Q2

Is Alonso off to rejoin Renault in 2018
German news is reporting that an overheard conversation between Luis Garcia Abad [Alonso's manager] and Renault boss Cyril Abiteboul indicates that Alonso could be making a return to the team where he won his two world championships.

The report claims that Alonso will be joining Nico Hulkenberg and therefore replacing Jolyon Palmer. During the driver press conference Alonso was asked about his future with McLaren and said that both the team and him had decided not to discuss his contract until the summer. I'm sure there will not be a vacancy at Mercedes, Red Bull or Ferrari, so a seat at in the works Renault car could be the next best option.

New Red Bull for Spanish Grand Prix

Red Bull have announced that they will have a very different car on tract for the grand Prix at Barcelona in May. It seems that the team has had 3 different sets of data, the data from the on track information doesn't match up with the other data from the wind tunnel and CFD information which also don't match each other.

When interviewed Horner admitted "For the first time in a long time, the correlation between CFD, the wind tunnel and the race track does not match. We get three different sets of data".

new car or a new PU thought they had reverted to 2016 spec....

Alonso to Renault in 2018.. so Honda will produce a championship contender next year?

:hmm:

New car, the power unit is based on the 2017 Renault but with many of Red Bulls own parts added and it is badged as a TAG Heuer power-unit.

That was an interesting look at the Ferrari with Pat Symonds just now, in his view the Ferrari is not legal because of some parts on the floor :hmm: It will be interesting to see if the FIA agree with him
