European Super League (again)

Just heard that the new Champions League system has a 'legacy coefficient" for clubs, apparently getting a bye into future tournaments based on their performance in previous tournaments.

As the guy talking about it said, "it's just the Super League in slow motion".
The only bit that is formally agreed so far is switching to the ‘Swiss system’ that guarantees four more games in whatever you wanna call round one. There is no decision on whether to expand to 36 teams and it’s that that would mean a shift in the terms of qualification. Legacy coefficient (always a favourite fan chant on a Saturday afternoon) might be used to boost any big boy missing out - or they could completely change their plans and give it the winners of four more actual champions.

Have seen it suggested that the FA grew a spine and threatened them all with ejection from all their competitions as well as not sanctioning any work permits.
Chelsea Pitch Owners Association (the clue is in the name kids) were very unhappy so eviction from Stamford Bridge and being stripped of their name was being bandied around in their case.

They must all be punished or they'll try again. Massive legislation too please.

Talk of one US owner putting their club up for sale :hmm: almost certainly Liverpool (FSG) but that might be hot air.

One of the best things Ken Bates done for the club was to help set this up.
You could almost forgive him for the electric fence fiasco.

Even as an LFC fan I think there should be some punishment.

Likely too late in this season for anything to happen. Especially with the weighty legal teams across six very rich clubs.

I doubt the Champions League would want them banned for a year. The PL won't relegate them or anything that drastic.

Fine?
Points deduction for next season?
Other?

Fining very rich people won't work

Throw the fucking book at em

Liverpool are already circumventing a major punishment by refusing to participate in the Champions League next season through results

The LFC board statement was disgraceful:

"Liverpool Football Club can confirm that our involvement in proposed plans to form a European Super League has been discontinued.

In recent days, the club has received representations from various key stakeholders, both internally and externally, and we would like to thank them for their valuable contributions"

No mention of fans, no apology, just the language of money

Indeed.

Fining a player £50k for racism (as an example) is no punishment for a millionaire. Fining billionaire club owners a few million quid is just an annoying legal battle at best.

They brought the clubs history and now think they own it.

Cunts

I think you're "key stakeholders" now

Ideally there should be some continued pressure throughout the game to change ownership rules and how money is distributed. I fear the anger will fizzle out without any genuine changes or consequences.

Not sure about that. I think football was getting to a crunch point with finances spiralling out of control and covid accelerated that. That's why the scab clubs sought to exploit the situation and allow themselves to continue racking up insane levels of expenditure and debt. But its backfired in spectacular fashion. Reform is now inevitable because the situation is increasingly unsustainable - but now the cartel clubs are on the backfoot and governments are seriously looking at regulation - a space has opened up that wasn't there before.

Even if public focus moves on, the EPL14 clubs will be determined to put something in place that stops this ever happening again. They are furious at the owners and chief execs of the Scab Six. I took a great deal of pride in Everton going in two footed yesterday morning :)

I believe FIFA have said that they wouldn't consider a 50+1 rule being imposed by the British government to be unacceptable interference in the game so it's an option, albeit one I can't see the government or EPL being able to stomach

Where this leaves Real and Barca, fuck knows. They're each over a billion Euros in hock. But who cares tbh

Real and Barca will be fine, they might just need to stop chucking so much at transfers and wages for a bit though. Could definitely see the end of them as the de facto top clubs.

They have fucked themselves financially. This might have eased their self inflicted financial woes but they were already deep in the mire before C-19 and are worse so now. Yet they are still looking at £100m plus players on £500k a week to 'help them' get back to their best.

Statement from Dowden:

Oliver Dowden, the UK’s Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, has been speaking this morning.

“It’s very important that we don’t see this as the end of the process. What this is highlighting, more than ever, is the need to look at the wider governance of football … I met with the president of Uefa on Monday and I’ll be … speaking to him again later today. We’ve been absolutely resolute in saying that we will not have our national game taken away from us for profit.”

In many ways the most important moment is now and will decide who wins the ‘peace’. A review of the ‘wider governance of football’ is welcome and supporters need to keep up the protests and continue to demand: 50+1, independent regulation and a wage ceiling across the pyramid.

I hope we see thousands more scenes like that at Chelsea last night

One thing about debt - my understanding is for this lot debt is good - debt is free money right now - Apple's debt is: "long-term debt is at $94.05 billion and current debt is at $18.68 billion, amounting to $112.72 billion in total debt ".
If the suggestion of this graphic is that they're in financial trouble, I dont think thats necessarily the case, in fact more likely the opposite. Though there are many variables, some may be with short term debt to be paid back. Im sceptical though
