European Super League (again)

Johnson has nothing to lose by sticking his oar in, if it gets called off he can polish his Man of The People credentials, even if his inteference has absolutely nothing to do with why it gets called off. If it doesn't it's a safe bet that no blame is likely to stick and he will get some credit for trying.
...without having to actually try

I expect more of the 'it has to be done' line that we saw the Real Madrid President start with. They want a risk-free stake and they want to enhance their profits. It's nothing to do with the good of the game, hence this 'legacy fans' and 'future fans' stuff. Two-faced owners are trying to demolish the foundations of the sport for their own interests. We know the institutions of the game aren't up to scratch, but we have to draw a line and preserve the basics of a competitive sport rooted in communities.

This was the first five pages in the print version of the Guardian today!

Football is being ruined by money. I no longer care who wins (so long as it's not Manchester United)

So do I. By the EPL and the 14 clubs not in the ESL will want to protect ‘the brand’ and the TV money so I suspect a grubby compromise that gives these fuckers an even bigger slice of the cake within a further revamped ECL (or at least the TV rights for it) is where we are heading.
UEFA should now rescind the offer of reforming the CL. Why should they have a fall back position which is better than they currently enjoy?

I'd be amazed if they did that. Leaving aside the nature of UEFA they'll have been making assurances to the team owners who haven't joined the ESL. Most of whom have referenced the changes announced yesterday to the format. We need to remember this isn't a battle of good v evil and that the solutions we would want to see aren't on the table.

Do you think Liverpool gets a lot of overseas tourism? I don't

as someone that regularly attended Liverpool games up until about 10 years ago there were huge influx of European and Asian supporters. The locals would call them tourists and generally get frustrated at them taking photo/selfies/videos every time there was an attack.

Anyway it’s unlikely these people just flew it at 1pm and fucked off at 7pm. I suspect they made a weekend out of it and probably then moved onto London to do touristy things. So in short. Yes. Thousands of foreigners attend most Liverpool weekend games (mid week not so much) and being in tourism for the city and the rest of the country. Probably even more now the attendance has been increased. X that bythe other clubs (except spurs lol) and you’re talking millions of tourists every weekend arriving just to watch premier league football live. I suspect it’s the same for most of the European big teams.

lol. I just reminded myself of the ‘Thomas cook’ partnership that pissed off fans as well. So even UK supporters could buy weekend breaks in Liverpool with over inflated priced match tickets included in some of the best seats in the house.
With it mega difficult to get tickets as it was this was the icing on the cake for a number of supporter groups. I suspect other teams do/did the same.

I stopped going to Liverpool regular about 10 years ago. When they decided that to have a chance of buying tickets you had to buy a membership at £30ish a year. With no guarantee that you’d even still get any. £30 a year just for the privilege of the chance to get tickets. Fuck off.

haven’t bought a shirt for probably as long and generally refuse to put my hard earned money into their coffers. Murdoch/Sky and BT can fuck off too and I pirate the fuck out of it with an IPTV sub.

still follow the team, was surprised at how underwhelmed I was when our 30 year title drought finally came to an end. Football sold out in 1992 and hasn’t looked back.

Of course there is a lot to see and do in and around Liverpool besides visiting Goodison. The World Museum is probably the best museum in the country outside London, then there is all the Beatles things obviously, you've got Chester and Manchester in easy traveling distance and for several years there was a U-Boat that you could actually go inside (before like so many other things in Birkenhead it ended up cut up and on bricks). Its a great night out too, or at least it was.

There's also the Museum of Slavery and a couple of good galleries.
