Ernesto Laclau RIP

articul8

Dishonest sociopath
Died after a stroke apparently. Would be interesting to compare/contrast with Stuart Hall.

That's a shame. He was a regular at the North London Tavern in Kilburn High Road.

My friends wife used to work there. He was forever trying to get her to sing along to Italian partisan songs.

RIP.

Heart attack according to Robin Blackburn?

I'm actually here at Essex Uni now... although not to mourn. Massive influence on neo-Marxism and a generation of students of *ahem* 'theory', but I can't help feeling it was all ultimately hot air. I did enjoy 'Hegemony and Socialist Strategy' but mainly for the clarity by which the errors of neo-Marxism were laid out.

"Post-Marxism" is the term I believe. I found that book utterly insufferable. RIP though.

Indeed, apologies, post-Marxism was the running theme* in that text. Elicited a nice response in NLR from Norman Geras iirc?

Yes, although IIRC it was also quite grumpy and written in that wild-eyed aggressive Leninist style that didn't do much to advance Marxism's public image. Geras (RIP too) would end up taking an even worse turn than Laclau and Mouffe - he became a fully fledged liberal hawk fully committed to Bush and Blair's war on terror and all subsequent western interventionist agendas.
