Eddie Van Halen RIP

He didn’t actually invent tapping but he certainly made everyone believe he did so that is good enough.

He was also clearly a massive influence on Slash and a lot of later 80s metal guitarists.

Hot For Teacher is such a lol video too. So wrong in many ways and yet undeniably ‘of its time’

Fair play.

65 is too young these days, but I bet he lived. I saw then in '78 supporting Black Sabbath. I was a (part-time) punk by then, but my mate was a metal head and needed someone to go with. They were great at what they did, but I've never been a big fan of metal.

Fuck, man. The whiff of Spinal Tap about 'em doesn't even begin to detract from riffs like this...

I know he'd been affected by cancer for a long time. 65 is nothing these days. Excellent guitarist. Van Halen was one of the sounds of my younger years. Seems like a lot of musicians that I like or that have provided some sort of musical backdrop to my life in some way have gone this year.

He maybe didn't invent all the techniques but he definitely pulled them all together in the 70's to be one of the most influential guitarists ever. Defined the sound of his time. RIP EVH

Same type of cancer my mother is currently undergoing treatment for.

Not the biggest fan, but I had a listen to some VH this morning.

You mean Spinal Tap had a whiff of VH about them

What I meant was that they're that kind of band, not that they ripped Tap off!

But although obviously VH pre-date Tap, I think it's fair to say that the relationship between the parody and the various 'real' bands it was supposedly based most closely on wasn't entirely one-way once Tap became as successful as many of them in real life.

Was never much into VH, but my mate who was a big fan dragged me to see them when we were about 16. Was the first big rock show I'd been to, complete with fireworks and elevating drum riser.
