Dulwich Hamlet 2-0 AFC Sudbury, Sat 22 Oct, 3pm

this wasn't supposed to happen
There is a football match on Saturday that you might like to go to, so here's a thread about it.

My excuses for watching the Hamlet and not my daughter play for Lewisham Raiders u14s on Saturday afternoon have run out. So unlikely I'll be there. Will someone else walk their dog aimlessly around the ground during play? It tends to bring the team good luck.

Good crowd
Good atmosphere (second half in particular)
and a strong performance from the Hamlet
and most importantly a win and clean sheet

Stikers should have bagged a couple more

Preston Edwards strong performance in goal

1,683 in attendance
and now 5th in the League - not sure how - but we are
helped by the fact that of the 6 teams above us in the League at the start of the day only one Needham Town won)

Attendance
First nine home games 2015/2016 (6 Sat 3 Tues) average 1,068
First nine home games of 2016/2017 (6 Sat 3 Tues) average 1,129

amusing episode when member of security staff tried to confiscate my can of ginger beer - because beer is not allowed

We flattered Sudbury with that score: we should bagged at least 4 given the possession and attacks. Sudbury were pretty woeful opponents. Great crowd of over 1,600 too :)

Not sure we'll see a better shirt sponsor than "Ascot Celebrity Canines" this season. A "Luxury, Top of the Market, Dog Clothing and Accessories Brand", apparently. The streets of Sudbury must look sensational.

We certainly won't see a sponsor whose logo looks more like a bong from a distance

I can honestly say I saw so little of the match to have little clue whether the performance was good or not. But at least the kids seem to be good luck.

I preferred Harrow Borough, who are sponsored by a pet food company called Barking Heads. At least you can see the logo properly!

I didn't think they were that bad, I just thought we convincingly outplayed them. They were defensively quite sound and limited us mainly to half-chances for the first half. They only really posed a threat up front after going two down.

I felt that was the most 'champion-like' Hamlet performance of the season. I didn't get to Lowestoft, and the thrashing of Folkestone was enjoyable, but that scoreline could easily have been much closer and our goalkeeper was voted man-of-the-match in a 6-1 win!

Good sharp piece of finishing by Dumaka, darting in ahead of the keeper to flick home a teasing near post cross, and terrific goal by Tomlin, who beat the keeper at his near post for sheer power.

Other results were mostly helpful with only one of the five sides who started the day ahead of us winning, and two losing. We need not just back-to-back wins but a run of wins now.

Great to see another win, and was really pleased that we didn't seem rattled at 1-0 with 20 or so to go - no sense that the team were expecting to concede.

That said, we've a lot of ground to make up (admittedly with a lot of time in which to do it). I know the various merits of arguing games in hand vs points in the bag, so I won't do that here, all I'll do is show the table re-ordered by Points Per Game played. We're some way off play-off form just yet. Of our six November League games though, only one (Needham) is against a side above us, so a good chance to improve.

It is to compensate for their enormous badge! Otherwise it would just look silly.
Don't know the regulations, but surely that sponsorship must be over and above the maximum Football Association regulations, unless they've been changed recently?

The lowest points total by any of the champions in the three seasons since we returned to the Premier Division is 95, by Hampton. We would need 71 points from our remaining 30 matches - something like 22 wins, five draws and three defeats - which is a really tall order, so the championship is probably beyond us now. I'm still confident we can at least match last season's fifth place though. We have a fantastic array of forwards now, and the likes of Tomlin and Sekajja seem more reliable and consistently effective than some of last season's underachievers. I'm still a bit worried about the defence, and the fact that with Carew & Beaney together at half back they share the same shortcomings of lack of pace, and vulnerability to opponents counter-attacking. I felt Quade Taylor did well at right back on Saturday. He was always a very tidy footballer with good positional sense in his previous spell, when he played central midfield whilst still a Youth teamer; I'm sure he can do a good job anywhere across the back four or in midfield.

I would hazard a guess that the Harrow Borough logo is significantly larger than the maximum permitted under FA rules.
Yes, it doesn't really need the dog face part of that logo, just the wording would be more than adequate, and it would look a real mess on anything other than a plain shirt.

Slow day....
Pink Panther got me thinking so I looked at the last 12 seasons (since playoffs were introduced) and worked out what, on average, we'd need to do from here to get 1st-5th.
- We need to go at almost 2.5 points per game to get top.
- We need to go at over 2.0 points per game to get a home playoff game.
- We need to go at over 1.8 points per game to get in the playoffs.

Finishing second or third would probably require 18-20 wins from the remaining 30 games; fourth or fifth 16-17 wins. Both are definitely achievable, especially with a team more settled in to each other.

But finishing top would require probably 24 wins out of 30. That's very unlikely. So unless this year's winning total is way below average it looks like playoffs at best.
