Driving tips for touring the Bavarian Alps - any recommendations

Gis a lift?

But seriously have a look at the Lonely Planet guide to Germany - it includes information for motorists, as well as having a slightly different bias to Frommers.

Greebo when you find yourself on an unlimited stretch of Autobahn and the locals are going crazy, don't be tempted to join in to the suicide merchants. Just drive reasonably quickly, 80mph for example and follow decent lane discipline, pulling over as soon as you have overtaken for example. Just because the locals want to commit Hari-Kari, and drive lemming like over a cliff, does not mean you have to join them!

I can't offer any advice about the driving as I don't drive but it's a lovely area to tour - my sister lives in Bavaria and I have visited a few of the places mentioned.

be wary on the Bahn - dont stress the car if its not up to it , keep out of the outside lane if possible as the big boys cane it down the outside and dont like to have to brake. And never give anyone the finger or suchlike, as its a crime IIRC and people will report you for it.

I Lived in Berch. for a year - enjoy it - go for a hike up the Watzman, spend a day in Salzburg. The KJelstein house is just a resturant now, but views are good. Thers a couple od beautiful day hikes around Bayerish Gmain to the peaks of mountains and not too difficult either. Bad Reichnahall is an Spa town, so maybe treat youself so a days treatment in the Brine spas.

In Berchsgarten, many of the hotels are US Army owned , for R&R for their forces - if you can bluff you way in, drinks are stupidly cheap. Theres alos a real US PX store in town IIRC if you need Hershsys and suchlike.

Its a beatiful part of the world. Enjoy your trip
