Dolly Parton

soulman

is no more...
Dolly%20Parton.jpg

Her family was, as she described them, "dirt poor", and lived in a rustic, dilapidated one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains, in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. Parton's parents were parishioners in the Assembly of God Church, a Pentecostal denomination, and music was a very large part of her church experience. She once told an interviewer that her grandfather was a Pentecostal "holy roller" preacher . Today, when appearing in live concerts, she frequently performs spiritual songs. (Parton, however, professes no denomination, claiming only to be "Spiritual" while adding that she believes that all the Earth's people are God's children.)

a wonderful singer, songwriter and human - remarkably liberal and reasonable given her background and context.

a fucking star, basically

Agreed. Went to Nashville a couple of years ago and standing in RCA Studio B listening to one of the recordings she made there was a very special moment

has anyone ever been to her theme park, dollywood?

Yep. It was a more downhome version of what was Opryland...lots of bandstands in this case featuring bands led by her brothers and cousins of which there are many.
Had loads of crafts things going on which was quite good (eg locals foods, dulcimer-making etc) but not many rides.
Nice mountainside setting but Pigeon Forge itself has over the past 15 years become a seething wretch of strip malls. Amoky Mountains are quite nice but better on the NC rather than TN side.

If she didn't she should've :D

I reckon she did ;)

she's been happily married for years. Her hubby is a country-hating metal fan (she covered Stairway To Heaven as an anniversary gift :) )

Dolly rocks  I saw some factoid about her on tv, that when she was making 'Nine To Five' she didn't know people only needed to memorise their own lines, so turned up to the first day of filming having learned the whole script.

Ms Parton is cooler than thou, in so many ways.

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
Theres nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, jolene

And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you dont know what he means to me, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
Hes the only one for me, jolene

I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him even though you can
Jolene, jolene

Truth there.

The acceptable face of C&W AFAIC. Famous for saying 'I didn't realise I grew up poor until someone told me.'

I was only half joking ;)

Agree with everything posted here, dont like most C&W but always make an exception for Dolly, fantastic voice, her version of "I will always love you" pisses all over Whitneys, never afraid of having a laugh at herself either,I'll even forgive her for starring in Rhinestone a fuckin godawfull film with Sly Stallone

"Dolly - how long does it take to do your hair?"

"I've no idea, darlin', I'm never there!"

:)

Wasn't it also her who said "You'd be surprised how much it costs to look this cheap".

I love Dolly. :D

Joshua

Anyone know if there's a vid of Dolly doing my favourite song?

Well a good ways down the railroad track
There was this little old rundown shack
And in it lived a man I'd never seen
Folks said he was a mean and a vicious man
And you better not set foot on his land
I didnt think nobody could be that mean
So I took me out walking down the railroad track
I was a-gonna go down to that little old shack
And just find out if all them things Id heard was true
There was a big black dog laying out in the yard
And it growled at me and I swallowed hard
And I heard somebody say well who are you
Oh and there he stood in the door of that shack
His beard and his hair was long and black
And he was the biggest man Id ever seen
When he spoke his voice was low and deep
But he just didnt frighten me
cause somehow I just knew he wasnt mean
He said what you doing snooping round my place
And I saw a smile come across his face
So I smiled back and I told him who I was
He said come on in and pull you up a chair
You might as well since you already here
And he said you can call me joshua
Joshua joshua
Whatcha doing living here all alone
Joshua joshua
Aint you got nobody to call your own
No no no no

We talked til the sun was clean out of sight
And we still talking when it come daylight
And there was just so much we had to say hey
Id spent my life in an orphans home
And just like him I was all alone
So I said yeah when he asked if Id stay
Oh we grew closer as time went on
And that little old shack it was a happy home
And we just couldnt help but fall in love
That big black dog and that little old shack
Sitting down by the railroad track
Its plenty good enough for me and joshua

Joshua joshua
Why youre just what Ive been looking for
Joshua joshua
You aint gonna be lonesome anymore
No no

Yodel-a-he-ho

Me and joshua
Me and joshua
Me and joshua yeah yeah
Me and joshua
