Denise Johnson, Primal Scream, is dead

Very sad lovely woman with great politics and a fantastic voice, Was really good with A Certain Ratio in their later years and their reformation, A Manchester legend

Primal Scream are getting, an apparently well deserved, kicking over on twitter about their treatment of her.

Can you link? What's it about? I know there was some arsiness last year about 'denise-adelica' and some artwork but she herself said she'd moved on from that and she'd never knock her days with them. I know she was pissed off at the time for them not stepping in to help but I'm guessing the power laid with Sony who were the ones being chief cunts about it all.

Or is this about something else? Can you link something, I don't do Twitter so it would be appreciated.

I dunno anything about the Primal Scream rift

I knew nothing about that either :(

But in terms of Screamadelica at least :

Above-quoted tweet said:
Without her you're just a 2nd rate pub rock outfit...

....... Andrew Weatherall also takes plenty of credit!

But no disrespect at all to Denise (RIP) -- I loved her on that album ...... I now want to check her other work ........

If you look at the Scream they released a decent jangle album, a dire American rawk follow up, a majestical album that Weatherall produced and then a series of increasingly clunking diminishing returns efforts. So I’d say you’ve got that bang on!

They followed an odd trajectory, pretty much as you've described.

The guitarist Robert Young, known as Throb, was an out and out rock and roller. He hated most of Screamadelica, it wasn't his music at all. Which must have been weird for him as its what ended up giving him success. I'm not sure how the money is dished out in that band but he ended up virtually penniless like Denise Johnson. They were all into drink, drugs and rock 'n' roll but he was into it most. Consequently just before he died he walked into the Addaction clinic where my mate works seeking treatment for his alcohol abuse. Addaction is a free clinic. He went there because he had no money left for private detox. He only went once. Died a couple of months later.

Screamadelica through to XTRMNTR are all on the good to excellent range, but their collaborators must take A LOT of credit.
