Cold water swimming

Really? I tried to motivate myself today, checked the temperature and just couldn't animate myself to swim in 14 degree water :(

I went 7.30am this morning. It was cold and grey out but still lovely. It can be hard to motivate yourself - my advice would be book 1st thing and go straightaway do you don’t have a chance to talk yourself out of it.

What are you wearing to swim now? Maybe you need to add a bit extra if you’re really feeling it. I’m still in a normal swimming costume but this morning was the first time I really noticed the cold in a prolonged way. I reckon I’ll be thinking about gloves/socks in a couple of weeks.

So jealous! The unpleasantness of this afternoon swim set me off on a depressing cycle about the summer being finally over, with nothing but a covid-filled winter waiting...
This is how I feel at the moment. Not about swimming, just about winter.

I would press on for a bit. You haven't got to the exhilarating stage yet. You do have to give yourself a stern talking to sometimes, but then you're glad you did. It's like an extreme sport that unfit middle aged urban dwellers can engage in.

Try going in 14 degree water and then asking yourself afterwards if you regret it, before throwing in the microfibre towel.

Not that I can talk, I gave up several years ago after I had a relatively mild hypothermia experience and lost my nerve - that was at about 5 degrees though. Plus the practicalities don't really stack up for me any more (specially atm with a broken wrist where getting dressed quickly is not going to happen).

Swam across the river in Mostar in Bosnia in mid summer. Was fucking freezing... dont think I've been in much colder than that! Maybe like 12 degrees?

I swam in the river near here most of the summer but for me it's gotta be sunny and warm-ish for outdoor swimming. I also am quite wary of stronger currents etc. I always make sure to get cold water on my neck shoulders and chest before going in...

Swam through this Winter, including a couple at 3 or 4 degrees. My, it's seriously addictive. Next winter I'll ditch the neoprene and am aiming for an ice mile in the next 3 or 4 years.
Same. I’m not in a full wetsuit but long sleeve swimming costume. I reckon I could ditch that for a normal one but no way I could lose neoprene gloves and boots.

Yeah, swam in about 9c the other day without a wetsuit but kept the neoprene gloves and socks on.

...but planning on doing a few things where they'd be against the rules.

I do like swimming in a wetsuit though, so I'll keep using it for less Ngee swims year round.

How's everyone doing this year?

I only started sea swimming 4 weeks ago, so maybe it's good I didn't get to to enjoy the warm delights of summer. Mainly doing it because I like swimming as exercise and it's free. I thought I'd be a big wimp about it getting cold but I'm actually enjoying it.

I'm a front crawl kind of person rather than a bobber so I'm hoping the exercise keeps me warm? Well I'm hoping to go through winter without having to pay to go to the leisure centre. Up to January anyway as we have a 6 week refresher technique course booked :)

I did get a shorty wetsuit, I think everyone else would see that as cheating but it works for me!

As things cool down, you might find you need a full swimming wetsuit, especially as you are aiming to do a proper long swim. It's the extremities that really get affected when the water temp goes below 12. So it's hats booties and gloves! Swimming wetsuits are made a bit differently to general wetsuits - more flexible at the shoulders and neck, which makes a big difference when you do crawl.

I swim all year without a wetsuit, but it's more of a bob when it's really cold and I only stay in for 10 minutes or so. The people who do the proper swims throughout the season are fully covered.

Swimming through the Winter again. This time with zero neoprene (I'm doing the Polar Bear challenge). As Idaho says, it's more of a bob than a swim. If I was trying to actually get any distance I'd be head to toe neoprene again.

The lake felt very cold this weekend (I think it was about 10c) and was both painful and exhilarating.

The sea the week before however was positively delightful.

I’m woken each morning by troops of blue tits wandering down the hill to the beach.

They are mega keen. I get in almost daily but suited up. Still in summer suit and barefooted which is fairly incredible This close to December

There is literally nothing stopping me trotting down every morning and having a cold dunk other than I’m still not entirely convinced it’s fun :D

I wish the sea was closer to me. It's SO much nicer and easier than the Lake.

That said I'm planning on doing two February swims in the Lake District.

The Bluetits are pretty inspirational, no?

I've been invited to go swimming in the sea next week (s.devon so could be worse even at this time of year!)

I'm thinking about it.

OK guess I'll have to start saving up for a full suit :D sea was 13 last weekend, not too bad but I know OH will worry when it gets to below 12. Actually I'm swimming in a tidal pool rather than the actual sea at the moment, it's nice though!

6.somethingc in the Lake this morning, but that was warmer than the air!

..there was something pretty zen about it all though, and still leaving the neoprene at home.

Oh wow that's cold! I had a dip in the tidal pools but would have been around 12, the wind was definitely colder. Managed 8 lengths, cut it short from last weeks 10

My feet are still warming up

Thought I would be OK 3 hours before high tide, but it was pretty rough this morning! Still got in to have a go haha, only a short 15 mins. 9 C but didn't feel the cold (just swallowed a load of sea water  )

Where abouts on the moor is that? Is there a good pitch there?
Park at the visitor centre in postbridge. The path is fairly easy to follow. I pitched about 5km away on fur tor. I didn't see any obvious spots near the waterfall, but I reckon a bit of wandering about would yield somewhere.
