coffee shops and american express

Im off to Amsterdam for work office move on Saturday, im not working until sunday afternoon, so im thinking of going for a smoke, trouble is Ive just had some dental work done and its cleared my cash funds , does anyone know if any of them take american express ( i have a work card i can use for my own expenses but cant get cash / travellers cheques out on it... )

has anyone used amex to get coffee and cake and where ?

No-where takes Amex, that's why they give it you

Don't think many coffeeshops take amex, but there an American Express on the Damrak

Never understood why anyone got Amex, they aren't accepted anywhere. Obviously company one slightly different but still.

no i cant get cash/ travellers cheques , ive tried, even from the amex travel centre etc

they locked them down after one guy who started got his, then went and bought a range rover lol.

They give us them as they arent accepted many places , however over here , ive found all sorts of bars , shops etch , ie wetherspoons ( who'd have thunk it ) , tescos, m&s's . im just going to have to explore a bit, might try to get my mates shoppping on it and get the cash from them, tis a right pain tho...

I'm pretty sure that most card companies charge retailers something like 40p per transaction. AmEx charges more like a fiver. But their USP is that they only issue them to people who are fairly well off or on expenses. That way some retailers opt to take the sting, reasoning that your average AmEx customer is going to splash more cash than someone with a Visa Electron or whatever,

Yeh I know why retailers dont accept them in the main. Just cant see why the hell anyone would actually choose to have one over VISA, Mastercard or whatever. Seems to be all drawbacks and no benefit.

This is more than likely the best option...if you need a lot of cash why not get your mates mates to come to the supermarket as well...you could start now while you are still in the UK, getting in rounds and shopping for people - then just change the cash up before you go.

A good one is to go for a meal with a lot of people but get them to hand you cash for their bits.

cheers all , ive got a couple of mates who might need to get 30 quids worth of petrol , im not going to need too much cash as all my food and accomodation is on expenses, its just for smokes really

and i am meant to be working......lol

I am lucky tho as Im getting pretty much a free trip out there

well funnily enough as soon as i checked in i was asked if i wanted euros charge to my room and it all went through ona seperate invoice, so i had a great day on saturday, but then a 11 hour days work on sunday in an office with no aircon and 12 hour day yesterday, but finished at 5 , flight at 9 , so i was able to go for a nice chilled smoke and a couple of beers before the flight. Wicked city, the vibe out there is so good. I want to move out, there is a possibility that next year i could go for the site manger role and have tio live there...
