Chris Killip Dies

Wow I’ve been looking at Mr Killip’s photographs and am absolutely blown away by them. Few things in particular. The absolute poverty of the North East. The immense scale of the ship building. The way the late 1970s/ early 1880s looks like a different world, an utterly different way of life. I just do not recognise this Britain, yet it was when I was born. These people look like they exist in a Lowry painting, or that George Orwell is walking among them. The world has changed. I’d love to see an exhibition of his work or look at a book. I can’t go this weekend but next weekend I might go to the city library and see if they have a book. Awesome stuff.

They do show a change, one that was just taken as a part of life for me, a child then adolescent in the 70's. I used to go and visit my Grandma in Newcastle and remember watching demolition of old houses near her's. These two pictures demonstrate the decline of industry and what it supported so well.

I borrowed his greatest hits album from the library and now I don’t want to return it.
Incredible images that you want to return to again and again. So now that’s two genius photographers I’ve belatedly discovered recently - Killip & Tish Murtha. Must be something in the water up in Tyneside.
I’m a dilettante when it comes to art and photography - what other photographers should I be aware of?

Fans of Killip, Murtha, Parr, Bolloten etc might be interested in this upcoming retrospective, at Leeds Art Gallery, of Peter Mitchell, a photographer who did much of his work in Leeds in the 70s and 80s. He's probably best known for his photos of the infamous Quarry Hill estate - a vast place beloved by its residents but condemned and knocked down by the authorities.
