They should have a DBS which you can examine.
Depending on the circumstances you may also need to consult a barred list (eg child barred list for those barred from working with children - I used this when I worked for a company that provided cleaners in schools) but you need professional access to this.

you can't just demand to see a DBS record, e.g. for a trades-person, and only in specified jobs (this can include voluntary roles) can an employer / organisation (who themselves have to register with DBS first) seek the 'enhanced' DBS that includes spent convictions and cross-checks people against the list of people barred from working with children / vulnerable people.
