Cheating judges

So how corrupt are the judges in some of these events?
There was a lesser case of the Japanese appeal in the men's gymnastics that lost GB a silver and, completely screwed Ukraine out of a medal.

But, I've noticed 2 very dubious cases so far both strangely resulting in German medals being awarded.
First in the womens fencing, where a Korean girl lost due to the Austrian time judge repeatedly resetting the clock enabling the German to get the points she needed.
Then again today in the women's cycling event the Chinese were relegated to losers in the final.
It amazed me that with the incident in the velodrome, the judge accountable for the decision couldn't even produce a photo-finish type picture like in horse racing, even tough he was surrounded with screens. The Chinese team watched on as he justified his decision on the screen but they seemed none to impressed and neither did the BBC commentators who where equally as astonished.

Then there's the downright blatant: in the boxing an Azerbaijani was decked 6 times and was still awarded a 22-17 win. The ref (from Turkministan) has been expelled and sent home for that one.
So, before I get shot down as a conspiracy theorist... it does happen.

Are there any memorable cases in past Olympics of fucked up judges' decisions?

And they didnt disqualify the german riding for GB in cycling team sprint!! You may be onto something here.

The brits got disqualified in a cycling race
Yep, basically the two hot favourites were relegated, paving the way for Z'Tchermanz to pick up gold. Very Fischig.

Another boxing ref in trouble for a dubious decision:

The AIBA also suspended the German referee Frank Scharmach for five days, for his decision to disqualify an Iranian heavyweight, and expelled the technical official Aghajan Abiyev of Azerbaijan.

There was a terrible decision in the boxing at the Seoul Olympics which, well, seems basically to be cheating by the judges

Good find! cheers.
The IOC - despite investigating and concluding that three of the judges were wined and dined by Korean officials - allowed the decision to stand.

Although in boxing the decisions of refs are subjecive and open to scrutiny, I still can't understand how the fencing fiasco and more so, yesterdays women's cycling sprint final can still be left to judges discretion. With the amount of technology available to them today, they shouldn't even need to make "decisions" but provide irrefutable, evidence-based facts.

Er, the British girls broke the rules. Extremely clearly. There was only one decision the ref could make.

On the other side, Team GB got a very dodgy decision in their favour when Agogo, despite having the shit kicked out of him, somehow won on points.

Andy Murray was complaining to the judge in his mixed doubles match that the Czech player kept foot faulting on his serve - the umpire ignored him - he/they won in the end so it didn't hurt him but still

Thats the most sensible post you have ever made, keep it up!

The best judges so far have been the Judo ones. All this bullshit discussion about video technology in football - these guys just look up at the big screen at the slow-mo if they're not sure and decide based on that. Not rocket science, FIFA!

2 in a row, I know now youve left yeself logged in somewhere and someone is posting as Gabi!

I agree, but the Chinese decision??? Have you seen irrefutable evidence of that? As I said before, it can't be that difficult to produce a photo-finish type picture. If they can do it for the 3.15 at Kempton then surely it's doable for an Olympic final.

I wonder though what margin of discretion has historically been used in the sport in such cases. This was mentioned a lot yesterday by the beeb commentators and they seemed to imply that the change-over line was more of a "guideline" than a stringent rule (as it is in the athletics relay)

who the fuck are you?

As if you didnt know. gabi is the regular poster on the rugby thread that can be relied upon to spout complete bollocks, hence my surprise when today he actually came out with some sensible posts!

As I understand it it was a legitimate appeal, and so it would have been the Japanese being screwed out of a silver if they hadn't appealed - they were simply getting a mistake corrected.

Complete bollocks? What, in particular? Can't say I've ever noticed you on the rugby thread tbh.

There was an item on Newsnight tonight relating to dodgy decisions for Azerbaijani boxers.

http://www.newyorker.com/online/blo.../olympic-fix-the-case-of-the-azeri-boxer.html

Last year, Anna Adams, a reporter for BBC’s “Newsnight,” spoke with Ivan Khodabakhsh, the C.E.O. of the World Series of Boxing. Khodabakhsh’s league is an initiative of the International Boxing Association, which also controls boxing in the Olympics. Adams was investigating allegations that the association, which is known as AIBA had conspired to fix the Olympics. “You promised Azerbaijan two gold medals at London 2012 in exchange for ten million dollars,” she said.

In September, the BBC broadcast and posted its investigation, which alleged that an “anonymous investor” from Azerbaijan had given nine million dollars to the W.S.B., in exchange for Olympic guarantees. The report included an explosive quote from an anonymous source whom the BBC described as an “insider”: Ivan boasted to a few of us that there was no need to worry about World Series Boxing having the coin to pay its bills. As long as the Azeris got their medals, the W.S.B. would have the cash.

The gloves are off. Russians accusing Britain of influencing the judges.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/aug/11/russia-accuse-gb-unfair-play
Russian sports minister Vitaly Mutko has accused hosts Britain of using political clout to win medals at the London Olympics.

"The Brits are just as [bad] as [the Chinese] in Beijing," Mutko told Russian media on Saturday. "Here in London everyone wants the British to win. They have a very strong political support."
