Did anyone on here make it to this one? I don't have much enthusiasm for visiting Canvey (not an) Island at the best of times, so I stayed local with Whyteleafe v Lewisham Borough.
I'm sure the match preview on the club website stated we had a full squad to choose from, but we picked an XI with only 2 natural defenders (both left footed) while several regular starters were omitted: Chambers, Braham-Barrett, Jeffrey, Shokunbi; Clifton and Hatfull not even on the bench and Parry only on the bench after a long sequence of consecutive starts. I'm guessing Deacon was at right back again, with either Ricketts or Krasniqi inside him at centre back. Mills and Scott scored the goals in stoppage time at the end of each half.
We're finally confirmed as not being able to reach the play-offs, with almost everyone else in the top half of the table also winning. The play-offs will almost certainly be contested by Chatham, Enfield, Wingate and Horsham, with Billericay and Hastings retaining an outside chance if someone has an absolute mare in the final fortnight.
Canvey have now taken only 6 points from the last 10 games, but Margate's defeat to Hornchurch means they can no longer be relegated. Margate themselves are still hanging by a thread, needing at least 4 points from their final two games against Billericay and Wingate to have a chance of catching Cheshunt, who need 3 points from 3 games to be certain of staying up.
In the big match at the top of D1S Ramsgate came from 2-0 down to draw with Cray Valley, thanks to an 85th minute goal from Jordan Green followed by an equaliser in the 7th minute of stoppage time, in front of a 2,500+ crowd. At least one of those clubs will join us next season, with Chichester, Sittingbourne and (almost certainly) Three Bridges making up the other play-off contestants.
Dartford are relegated from National South after losing 3-1 at Yeovil today, along with Havant and Dover. That's quite a spectacular flop after finishing 2nd last season. Truro, Hemel Hempstead, Torquay, Taunton and Eastbourne Borough could all occupy the final relegation place, possible with as many as 52 points (i.e. 4 more than we managed last year) although all but the last of those would be placed into the Southern League.
