Cannibal Holocaust?

Is Cannibal Holocaust a cracker?

I've just been lent a copy of Cannibal Holocaust having never seen it but heard about it years ago. Anyone seen it? Is it any good?

I'm a big fan of 60's to 80's Euro horror, but I don't care much for Cannibal Holocaust. Its film within a film structure was interesting, but in the end it's a ugly, contemptible film and its claim of making a statement about racism and imperialism is hypocritical and cynical to say the least. Its scenes of animals being tortured to death for real are indefensible (and thankfully cut in the UK release)

I don't know much about it tbh and didn't know that (the animals). I was given a copy cause I said I've not seen it and am a fan of a lot of horror. I was told it was 'innovative'.

If you are really interested in horror films watch it by any means, that's why I watched it. I just ended up not liking it very much. Being as shocking as possible just for the sake of it doesn't neccessarely make for great cinema.

Knowing about the animal cruelty means I'll never watch it. I did want to see it a while ago but after I read something about that it instantly put me off. It sounds vile.

it's overrated.
i got the impression that the director doesn't like women much.
reminds me of this HK film i saw about the BBQ pork killer. - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103743/
it's not that it was disturbing as such (as i like disturbing films).
but attacks on human genitalia, rape, women, animal cruelty...i just don't get any enjoyment out of it. and feel sorry for those that do.

I spent a day researching it online after hearing about it. Sounds nasty and I haven't seen it.....but probably would, given the chance because I'm a bit drawn to video nasties....

I like it, but it's not really a very good film. It's the sort of film you only need to see once.

The scene where they cut open a live turtle and eat it is pretty horrifying.

haven't seen it, seen Cannibal Ferox tho which is similar but apparently more gruesome. it is enjoyably shit with bad dubbing etc, and a totally stupid plot. these guys fuck up a heroin deal in new york and decide to escape to the peruvian jungle where they meet up with these clean cut dudes who are doing a research project to prove that cannibalism doesn't exist. well i guess you can see where that's going.

huh they do that in cannibal ferox too. i think cannibal ferox was trying to cash in on the success of cannibal holocaust

What video nasties shoud we watch?

Recomendations.
this is meant to be the nastiest:
www.imdb.com/title/tt0076295/

however from the user review:
"LAST HOUSE ON DEAD END STREET is a film I could never recommend to anyone with a clear conscience. It would be like condemning them to the rack, as this film can be seen as a form of torture. I have no idea why so many people have rated this film a 10 on the IMDB, it's not THAT good, but it something special in the annals of horror. Many people still have not seen it, making it a great triumph for those who managed to survive the viewing. Recommended to those who think they can take it, but believe me, this is really strong, graphic, demented stuff."

western video nasties, you can get anywhere.
and the choices will be obvious.

have a check on few of these HK productions.
it's a different style of nastiness.
tbh, i find them more offensive than nasty.

.

I would quite like a list of the obvious. I have not seen that many. I don't really want to go down the guinea pig films route (Yes I know they weren't real).

I think I will try

I spit on your grave
Last house on the left
Evil dead.

Am I doing it wrong?
you've got to see "The Gore Gore Girls" and "Blood Feast", they are totally amazing (Herschell Gordon Lewis films). you can borrow many good ones off the singer of Black Helium.

Did you give me back Bubba Ho Tep? He's in the evil dead isn't he?

I have just realised I will never get the time to see video nastys. I have a couple of films I bought ages ago that I have not got around to watching. I can't watch stuff before baby goes to bed and Mrs Suplex hates yucky films, even the sound, so she has to go to another room.

I could put a telly in the music room I suppose.

yes i gave you it back. yes Bruce Campbell is the star of the Evil Dead series. maybe i can project some video nasties in the Lee Hazlewood lounge at the gig on February 29th, you could see them then

Funnily enough I was offered a copy of this film yesterday. After hearing a brief synopsis I turned it down!

Cant say its overrated, because its not particularly rated by anyone. It is infamous, as one of those Italian gore films that was banned, but no-one rates it as art, I think.

The controversy had it that it was a snuff film, and that the cannibalism scenes were for real - since dissproved, followign a court case. It still got banned pretty much everywhere, on release.

The ban has since been revoke in the UK I think - I seem to remember seeing it in my local video store.

I watched on VHS back in the day, and its just a poorly made, poorly executed piece of work - has some charm value for that.

If you're into obscure lowbudget films then its worth a watch, but its for diehard film buffs only.

I still feel compelled to watch it but may well feel bad. I remember watching 'I spit....' years ago and frankly felt guilty for watching it. Not so 'Zombie Flesh Eaters' though.

It's nothing special, just a bit disturbingly sick.
Worth a look if you like gore, but it's not exactly magnificent cinema. It's trying very hard to be sick and shocking and it's interesting from that PoV.

Same goes for "I Spit on Your Grave" although that's a bit more harrowing because of the subject matter.

That is actually offensive and distasteful and not in a good way!
