Can someone explain Steam trading cards to me?

I have about 100 cards in my Steam account, but I have no idea what they are for or what I can do with them. Some of them have a small monetary value, apparently; others say they can be "broken down into Gems to use to create booster packs", whatever that means.

What can I do with these? Can I just sell them all on the marketplace and turn them into a tenner to buy more games with?

Sell them. They are worth about 4p each.

I asked my mate at work this and he said you get points which raises your "Steam Level".

To be honest that didn't really help.
