Help can anybody help me with mac error code 36

I can't duplicate any of the files on my desktop (or compress them) .

Have tried looking to see if the permissions are ok and they seem to be.
Tried updating the operating system, turning everything off and on again, left it to rest overnight in case it felt better in the morning and now I'm at the stage where you google 'error code 36' and everyone is trying to sell you some product that will save your mac .
Or they're telling you to open 'terminal' and do incomprehensible stuff in there which I am scared to do.

Your OS is probably more recent than what I’m running but have you tried disk utility, if it still exists on there? Repair/first aid.

I opened it but then didn’t know what to do will have another look.

what does that mean run it in recovery i really need to finish some work today

I don’t know about running in recovery mode. Never been asked that but mine is older.
