Camping Porn

Ooh! Ooh! Camping porn! MMMMMMM!

I've never tried a therm-a-rest, but did use roll-mats for years until someone lent me one of these:

202.jpg

Bloody comfortable and a piece of piss to put up (but do NOT get the four-legged version, unless you want to rupture something), they don't take up much space, but they do weigh more than a therm-a-rest. I used an inflatable mattress for a while, but it was bloody heavy and eventually burst.

As for stoves, I also vote for the flat butane stoves. Low, sturdy and have a built-in iginition switch, so you don't need to fart about looking for the matches.

We do have one of the Greenheat stoves and they are fine to use more than once. Just close the lid on the tin to starve it of oxygen when you have finished cooking. There is no way of controlling the heat, but the same could be said of Trangias. The main drawback I've found is the fuel is expensive to replace. :(

The most useless camping gadget I have ever bought was a wind-up mobile charger. The gears inside kept slipping so it wasn't charging very well and I've now lost the lead for it anyway! I now use a keyring-type charger that I just plug a 9v battery into and leave it for 30 minutes and it gives me enough charge for the day.

I've just returned from a camping trip to Whitby where I bumped into Moose and Mr Moose. Everyone shelved the plans they had for that day and ended up having a "couple" of sherbets and a curry instead! :D

i've got a battery one and its great, came free years ago at a trade fare and has saved me in many difficult situations

and the thermarests we borrowed for the glade were a godsend given the ground we were camping on. now we're wanting to buy some :D

Ive gone all soft porn... weve just got a 5 berth touring caravan
Thats like the page 3 of camping porn isnt it * hangs head in shame*

On the plus side I now have whole catalogues full of wonderful caravanning crap to covet including a proper rotary washing line:D

Havent read all of the thread Whiskers, but has anyone mentioned one of these yet? My favourite bit of camping equipment. I lost it for a while, then found it, then left it when I moved, then got it back again. Now I will never ever part with it :)

^^ That's

Someone tell me about tents... thinking of getting one, no idea where to start, besides wanting a 2 person and something that's quite light.

Good places to get them from? Price I should expect to pay? Would one that's say £50 do the job?

We had one of them but we didn't get good results.

you could pay £50 at the mo for a good tent becuase there are loads of sales on
usually you'd want to pay a little more for a quality 2 berth, nows a great time to buy
Look for a min 2000 HH ( hydrostatic head- thats the water resistance rating)
and flysheet first is easiest and driest if it rains

You might want to look at a 3berth if you arent intending to carry it in a rucksack etc becuase the berth sizes are tiny and generally 2 berths dont consider you will need kit with you!

Cheers LMHF, I'll take that into account and start my search

biddly - i have a minimum limit of 2.5 person tent cos otherwise it doesnt hold boots, bag, stove etc. the one we currently have is a 3man and thats just about right for two of us.

update on the thremarests:

well i decided not to buy thermarest branded ones and went for Gelert instead. about £20 cheaper and twice the size :D got them from wildday who were great :)

we used them at womad and had no problems with them at all.

they have indeed revolutionised my camping life.

wow.

:)

now - on another note - somebody (who isnt me) managed to leave the groundsheet for the porch bit of our tent at the glade festival. given that my tent doesnt seem to appear on the internet is there somewhere great that i can buy a replacement?

Ok, so a 3 person tent would be better (hope I won't be doing solo camping that often)... where didyou get yours from wiskey?

Are some brands better than others? I'm clueless :)

i got mine in the sales about this time last year.

make sure most importantly that it has TWO layers - a flysheet and an inner tent. if it doesnt you will get wet.

its probably best to go for a tent with lightweight carbon fibre poles (most are nowadays).

you need to think about whether you want a porch or dont want a porch, if you want windows, if you want more than one door etc.

this tent:

doesnt have any porch area, which means no place for wet boots etc. and the way the door is designed probably means all your stuff gets wet if you dont shut it.

this is more the style of mine (but mine doesnt have the big open bit at the front - just the two side doors)

i've never slept in one but these seem to be popping up this year

and finally the thing to think about is what sort of bag it comes in - if it has a sleeping bag style (drawstring at one end) it can be a nightmare to put away. if it has a zip along the length (a bit like a pencil case) its much easier to put away.

i dont think you can really buy a tent off the net without looking at some first. even if only to get an idea of how tall it is, how easy it is to get in and out etc.

i'm sure someone who knows more than me will be along shortly to tell you more :)

popular brands off the top of my head:

coleman
eurohike
vango
litchfield
gelert.

It's a toast maker for using over a camping stove. They are rubbish though, by the time your toast is brown it is also rock hard. Good idea though.

That does look quite nice and cheap, but it's 10kg - which sounds a bit heavy.

It is indeed an excellent tent. I have the lighter 200 model & personally it is probably the best designed tent I've ever owned. The only criticism is that it is a bit fiddly to put-up & yes, it is a tad heavy, although when split between two folk, it is fine. For bike-runs on my own, I have a tiny little 1-man tent from Argos that is surprisingly good, weighs next to nothing & was very cheap. Gelert do a 2-person in virtually the same design that I may treat myself to next.

Wildday & indeed most of the firms linked on this thread are all good firms to look at for tents.

Try asking around shops who sell that make. IME, few if any bother to send returns back so are usually sitting on a pile of old tents in the store which they are normally quite happy tobreak-up for spares. Also worth remembering for poles etc. ;)

If not, you can easily buy a bit of groundsheed material & peg eyelets/lops from most stores so it is dead easy to make a new sheet yourself.
