I reckon you're all lightweights. Bought one of these for £30:

Gore-tex bivvy bag. Great for hiking when you don't want to carry much weight/bulk around with you. You can sleep in it on wet ground in the rain and wake up bone dry.

That's nothing, I've got one of these: Bloody brilliant. It's a coat! It's a sleeping bag! you look a bit like a maggot! :D

I get serious cases of tent envy
But you already have a 3 bedroom detached, woman! What more could you want? :p

Please don't get me onto army surplus porn, folks, or I will have to have a lie down.

Solar shower - brilliant. I've been using one to heat water for the washing up this week - saves running the gas boiler on the boat. If you have a campervan or anything with a metal roof, in sunny weather it goes from nought to scorchio in less than half an hour.

At festies I bring a kids paddling pool and use that as the shower tray :D .

Also those pump action showers are cool too - its a big plastic canister with long hose and a pump thing on top, you pump it to make enough pressure for the attached shower head to work. A kettle of boiling water and some cold makes enough for two people.

I think you can go a long way with random poles, bits of wood, tent pegs and tarps. We have constructed all kinds of shelters in that way.

I'm also fond of the halogen torches I manage to pick up for a couple of quid in Hong Kong, the batteries last ages.

Seconded. We have a small square of decking to stand on, and we balance the shower on the roof of the van if there's no convenient tree to hang it from.

Its ok for bean and pot noodles and brews Unless it gets really cold then gas dosent like it .But then if you camping in febuary you are mad .
Those german army sleeping bags are fun if not particularly warm .

Yes they are worth it. I was in much the same position, years of being used to just sleeping on the ground, with just insulation. Then foam mats, airbeds etc.

thanks mate - food for thought :)

because the one you've selected is about as stable as jelly ime.

thast about it really.

depends if you want to eat your dinner off the floor.

oh and the flames blow out too

:( But I saw someone make bacon and eggs at a festival off something like that. Don't you just have to watch it and not let it fall??

the problem is when you go to stop it falling you grab the hot bit ;)

up until recently they were the only sort commonly available. but now they arent

theres several sorts. theres some that burn a brick inside what looks like the jaws of an animal trap.

i spose i was really saying dont get one that stands up like that. get a stable one :)

Ok for boiling a messtin of water but not anything which needs controling
like simmering

yeah i was just intreagued by them and was trying to show theres other sorts out there.

theres certainly no control over heat - and i cant work out what they burn that you can only use half of and save the rest for another time

I guess there must be a lid or something that blocks the oxygen supply to it.

Well I'm thoroughly confused about my stove now :D

PieEye - get one of the flat ones, they are great. I've used the "normal" ones for years and the flat one aqua bought not so long ago has been sooooooo much better.

Trangias are great if you're hiking/don't have a car, but otherwise listen to wiskey :)

LOL
I wish

saves a cold. wet walk across a field in the dark though whenever they say "MUUUUUUUUUMMM I neeeeeeed a weeeeeeeeee weeeeeeee"

Particularly when youve enjoyed your bedtime bottles of red a bit too much

i lurve camping! you guys are all so well-prepared. last time i went we had to use branches for tent-pegs  :)
