What do we think!

Campaigners have renewed calls for a second Brighton mainline rail route, which they say would reduce "bottlenecks" at East Croydon.

It comes after a Network Rail study found the proposed route, which would run from the south-coast city to London Bridge through Crowborough and Oxted, would be the fastest alternative to the current mainline.

Earlier this year, Chancellor George Osborne committed £100,000 to studying the viability of the extension, which campaigners say is essential to reduce overcrowding.

Network Rail's Sussex Study found Brighton Mainline 2 would allow travel from Brighton to London Bridge in 73 minutes, 17 minutes longer than the existing mainline.

Can they rebuild Uckfield station too please? :D

I'd happily back Uckfield being rebuilt. Saves me a portion of an hour and then some on the 29 bus to Brighton when I go back and visit the folks. I do have vivid childhood memories of standing on that platform waiting for slam door trains.

Fat chance I reckon; it would cost a fortune and there are lots of areas of the UK desperate for improvements in their railways and the investment can't all keep going to the South East, and it would plough straight through nimbyland.

Saying that I don't really know what I'm talking about :D davesgcr

Trust me - only of value if the massively expensive section to Canary Wharf from East Croydon is built - a recurring tale which is yet about to get another airing.

How about a stand alone new Crossrail line from East Croydon and let the (regrettably) closed section alone. ......

That was quick Dave, like a transport genie :thumbs :

I was taking a break from shovelling about a 1/2 ton of home made compost (OK - too much detail) - your message wasn't showing when I hit the reply.

Absolute load of nonsense - summarised as "we lost our little line in the 1970's cos we all bought cars ...now we want it back , it will only work though if we spend about £15 billion linking up bigger places - yes - quite. Money - if available - much better spent elsewhere - besides , how many people from Lewes go to Canary Row - about 20 a day maybe....and they can change at London Bridge.

However you cut it - there is no demand and no money. Both of the latter can be spent by sorting out East Croydon. Can tell them that for £10K - cash in hand.

Having spent 3 1/2 years commuting between Brighton & Gatwick it sounds like a good idea if 4 years to late. I could probably count on both hands the number of times the train i got home was on time.

Purely a flippant comment - shall we say , there are no issues in me doing work , just retired - and enjoying the time and other things - so do not need work.....(for now) ! .

I know. i was just trying to join in in the flippancy :(

Reinstating the Uckfield-Lewes link has been aired periodically for years. It's never happened and probably won't now, mainly because a) it passes through a very rural area which wouldn't generate much traffic (though it would relieve pressure on the main Brighton line), and b) too much of it's been built all over, especially in Uckfield.

Uckfield does have probably the least impressive station in the south-east, but I doubt there's space to do much with it as it's tight between some buildings and the river. I was drinking with some friends in the Cock and Bull across the road - universally known as the Cock and Balls - on the night someone torched the old station.

I am sure the preservationists between Tunbridge Wells and Eridge will be impressed at having to move

A more radical view might be to incorporate the Bluebell Rly - giving a direct connection from Haywards Heath to East Grinstead (re-electrify Horsted Keynes to HH increase the line speed to 80 mph) - and the rest - however , less of a time penalty than via Uckfield but still a slow route. (which is why it never became a viable through route in the first place)

The real answer of course is to build a new line from around the Croydon area to Docklands - "Crossrail 3" - hanging the rural and charming area onto this is an answer to a non problem , IMHO.

The Brighton line seems to break down a lot esp on sundays for some reason. Ive been told its cos the leccy runs under the ground and is fucked by flooding and freezing water. Many times I've gone back Monday morning after contemplating the dreaded rail replacement service. Any improvement would be good.

Frustrating - but the route is hammered with the traffic on it (giving little time ovenight for major track works - ergo much is done on WInter weekends) , and the geology does not help (chalk and clay) , plus there are some very wet tunnels and a large number of cuttings - some now in their second century. I don't work anymore , and not making excuses - but there is a special team working on looking at these issues. Should improve. Fingers crossed.

Wow, I knew it was congested and slow, but didn't know it was that bad. Something Should Be Done.

Again -and not an apologist - there were 72 minor retimings made for the May timetable to try and improve punctuality of services in the morning peak period between Brighton and London via GTW - one train was taken out (and started from Gatwick -not Brighton) - screams of outrage from certain locations at the loss of one train - but in reality there was not a proper path for it - so it was going to fail every day. The infamous 0728 from BTN now runs to time most days - if the infrastucture works , etc - there is a chance of a right time railway. Regrettably that -and other issues - conspire against it too many times.

The Southern area has - in my opinion - the very best train planning team I have ever come across - trouble is they are working in a ridiculously complicated area - with so many competing requirements.
